Forums - Nintendo - What do you love about Wii

of the big three consoles the Wii is seriously lacking in more than one genre. No simulated racing games, one (bad) 3d fighter, no WRPGs.

None of those genres have traditionally been on Nintendo consoles though (NES - Wii), so I don't think people expect them now.  Maybe the exception would be 3D fighters, the N64 had a bunch, and the Gamecube had some names like Mortal Kombat: Deception, Bloody Roar: Primal Fury and of course SoulCalibur II. So maybe a good 3D fighter would be accepted on the Wii.

As for WRPGs, I don't think any Western developer has ever even shown an interest in developing such a game on any Nintendo console, ever?  The only one I can think of is Retro with Raven Blade and they are part of Nintendo.  And a true racing sim wouldn't work because you would need traditional controls only, Miyamoto even said that motion controls wouldn't work with F-Zero and that game is more of an Arcade racer.  Need for Speed is probably the best racing game with licensed cars on the Wii.

But if you are looking for a sim-like game with a motion control option, then The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces might be for you.

I love the games as I don't really care for most of the genres the Wii is supposedly lacking in.  I also love the 'philosophy, ethos or whatever you want to call it' with the Wii.  Also the Hanobi festivals have helped me play games that I never had the opportunity to before such as Super Mario RPG, Sin and Punishment, Ogre Battle 64 and the like.

i love it because the games are so fun and pretty simple, also it replaces my old gamecube , NES , SNES, N64 in one package!

did i mention the games are cute?

also the splitscreen multiplayer games is where the Wii shines IMO

I live for the burn...and the sting of pleasure...
I live for the sword, the steel, and the gun...

The games

The one thing that really makes Wii such a beloved console in my eyes is that it's a haven for Platformers. The genre was on its way to being a niche during last generation, especially compared to the generations before it.

But with Wii, we've seen the home console Platform market explode thanks to that lovable plumber. And thanks to him, other developers have jumped onto the Platform wagon, whether it be 3D or 2D (which was previously unthinkable. 2D? On a home console? Psshaw!).

Gotta say, with the Wii being the home to titles like Mario, Sonic, Donkey Kong, Wario, Klonoa, MegaMan, and many others... it's been an awesome experience.

Now I can't wait for Donkey Kong Country Returns, Sonic Colors, and Epic Mickey... and they're all coming out next month.

The amount of Samus I can get out of that little white box! It's insane!

More than anything, Mario Kart Wii.

Innovation.

Motion Controls which add  a lot of viseral fun to some games (Sports, sandbox, etc)

IR controls which have brought point & click gameplay to consoles (put sadly not RTS... or top down WRPGs)

Arcade fun!!  I very rarely (like only when I'm home sick) have hours to play a game.  I usually play is short bursts which Wii is great for and the HD system generally suck at.  I hate the Hollywoodization of games.   I grew up on Pac-man and Galaga and that's what I want in a video game, even to this day.

Accessibility!  Finally a system I can play with my girlfriends instead of in spite of them.

It's made video gaming mainstream!  No longer are VG considered the domain of nerds and geeks and middle-aged men who need to grow up.  Now girls, adult women and the parents of middle-aged men who need to grow up, play to!

It's small, unintrusive and a pleasant addition to the living room.   I don't mind having a Wii by my TV but I hate the look of the 360 (the slim is nice).   And the original PS3 was a huge space hogging beast too.

Relaxing games!  And one handed gameplay!  I love Endless Ocean and point and click affairs to unwind and I also play a lot while eating, having a tea/beer or doing housework.   There's a lot of games on Wii I can do that with.  Almost nothing on HD.

Exercise!   These days about half of my Wii time is working out and keeping fit.  360 meanwhile collects dust in a corner.

Huge library of cheap games.   There's a ton of great and fun games on Wii, many available for $20 or less.  There's even more crap but a little research goes a long way.  Anyone who says there's no good games on Wii is a snob.

Nintendo - Honestly, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy.  I don't like 3d Mario, Zelda, Starfox, F-zero, hated Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Animal Crossing etc.   But Nintendo makes quality titles and has made a lot of my favourite games this gen - Wii Sports/Fit, Endless Ocean, Fire Emblem, Metroid:OM, SSB Brawl, Punch-Out!, Mario Kart, Mario Strikers, NSMB, etc.

Innovative titles & Japanese titles - Unfortunately these were mostly in the first year or so, but we still get the odd gem.  Titles that would probably never appear on HD because of cost and risk.     Dewy's Adventure, Elebits, Sakura Wars, Let's Tap, Dokapon Kingdom, Power Pros, Ivy the Kiwi, Opoona, Zack & Wiki, etc.

I could go on... but Wii managed to do what GC/PS2 and 360 couldn't - became my primary gaming system which, until Wii had always been PC.
