aw damn it, I read some idiotic conspiracy theories on Gaf about this NPD thing and I thought to myself "Makes me kind of proud I haven't seen that on VGC yet"  thanks for killing that joy for me.

you honestly think that it is sheer coincidense that the month Halo Reach comes out has nothing to do with the fact that the numbers are not being reported anymore? the 360 was set to be at 600k this month and the ps3 sub 300k

I think you're seeing what you want to see.  You want to think that Sony is so ashamed that they would do something like this and you ignore the much simpler answer that NPD stopped giving out free numbers because it makes the numbers people pay for seem more worthwhile.  NPD could have picked this month because they know Reach is interesting info, or more likely it was just coincidence.

Occam's Razor says that the simplest answer is often the right one, and the idea that NPD did this because it would make them more money is the simplest answer.

This is why I tried to keep your mouth shut by bribing you with Ice Cream! But you had to say the truth I'm disappointed in you sir!

Well, you dont know what you're talking about because they (NPD) already get paid to track this data.. they have just been convinced not to make release certain numbers - although they will still tell the press what the top selling games are - they wont tell us how many !?

Thankfully, there are other ways of tracking data AND if you look at many of VGchartz data estimates they were typically very close to what the NPD released later.. and VGchartz have always been pretty close on hardware and software sales using all their sources..

I demand you commit seppuku for this nonsense

pressure from Sony, they where about to be crushed by the 360, and will for the forseeable future so to save face the pressured NPD to stop releasing numbers so they can release there own inflated numbers that are shipped to the warehouse and count those as sales to keep things close, other wise it would be a pr nightmare for sony to explain to investors why the 360 is wupping the ps3 in NPD

I guess if the PS3 suddenly, within 2 yrs, goes from being 10 million behind the Xbox 360 in the USA.. to EVEN STEVEN... we'll know they are pulling the same PR crap they are in europe "oh gee its so hard to tell what we sell, but we'll tell you we know its...[THIS HUGE NUMBER]" ... of course if you read the article - NPD IS STILL TRACKING CONSOLE AND SOFTWARE SALES - THEY JUST ARENT TELLING ANYONE EXCEPT SONY, MS, NINTENDO..

Well of course they get paid for it, they have far more sales data than they used to show us each month and companies pay for all that data, but that doesn't mean that they can't get more companies to pay for it if they stop giving away what they were.  Hell there are even people at Gaf talking about pooling their money together to afford a subscription.   I doubt that's allowed but there are probably a few companies that were just using what they got for free that are now considering paying.

sure...its a nice theory...if sony had some sort of pressure to use against them and if they tried this in the past when they were doing poorly.

The figures for hardware don't really matter. Most quarters system sales are going to be split like this in the current market:

                Americas                EMEAA             Japan

Wii             40-50%                  35-40%            15-20%

PS3            35-40%                   40-50%            15-20%

X360          58-63%                  32-35%             3-10%

PSP             20-25%                 35-50%             30-40%

DS               35-40%                 35-40%             20-30%

(For Wii, Nintendo has shipped 36-37m / out of roughly 77m Wiis through Sept to the Americas, 11m / 77m to Japan, and the remaining systems to EMEAA - roughly in line with my guesses above. For X360, the 1.3m X360s in Japan are 3%-4% of ltd 360 shipments, and the 24-25m X360s shipped to the Americas roughly fall in there too...same for PS3 and the others).

My point is even if Vgchartz & NPD stopped giving numbers you'd all still be able to track hw sales by following figures from earnings releases.
