I bought a PS3 on launch and I have bought a Wii almost three years ago....
I bought Super Mario Galaxy and had some fun with it. I thought my wife would have fun with it, too. But after the intro she was kind of shocked... she found the story to be laughable, so i couldn't get her into it. Every time I put the game in she asked me to play Little Big Planet with her instead. She totally liked to customize her Sackboy...But it was quite fun (but the story is really laughable...). Maybe I get Super Mario Galaxy 2 too.
I bought Smash Brothers and we played it with some friends. But somehow we 4 all couldn't get into it and it became boring pretty quickly. I tried it out solo because I wanted to get Solid Snake but after some hours I gave it up...
We played Mario Kart (4 players again), but it was the same. We played some tournaments, but it was somewhat lacking. I must have played the hell out of Super Mario Kart back in the 90ies, it was so much fun. Mario Kart Wii just couldn't repeat the experience. Don't ask me why, but I also didn't like Mario Kart 64 either...The old one is still fun, though.
Wii Sports/Wii Play.... that games were like Eyetoy. The first hour is quite fun, but it gets old after the first day. I showed the game to some friends and we played together, but those games are just lacking depth. If they hadn't been packed with the console/second WiiMote I surely wouldn't have bought them.
My main problem with the Wii is, that Motion Control is getting annoying after some time. Whenever it is optional, I use the classic Controller instead. Fifa 09 Wii ... Shoot = waggle...
Damn, if i read my post it almost sounds too negative. I really liked my NES back when I was a kid, and the SNES had some really awesome Games, although Europe didn'gt get some JRPGS...Super Mario World and Zelda 3 where among the greatest games I have played...and I bought the remakes for the GBA. Secret of Mana, Actraiser, Terranigma... nostalgic...
What I really like about my wii is the Virtual Console. I played Secret of Mana, bought Super Mario RPG (First time available in Europe!), Donkey Kong Country and some other Games, that were not reissued on GBA before. That was one of my main reasons why I bought the Wii. The other was Square-Enix releasing Dragon Quest and some other stuff on the console. ... Hmm, maybe I am one of the few people who didn't buy the Wii for Nintendo Games... In Fact, I do not like the way Nintendo is heading. ..
There are good games on the Wii. But after playing Final Fantasy XIII, Heavy Rain, Uncharted and Heavenly Sword it is hard to go back to the Wii. Someone said before that the Wii is not going Hollywood and that Gameplay>>>>>>Story/Presentation.
For me the Story is the most important part of gaming. Gameplay is interchangable and after twentysome years of Gaming you almost have seen everything. I wouldn't go back playing Fifa98 if I could play Fifa11...but I am glad to go back playing Final Fantasy 1-12, Super Mario World or Link to the Past. It is the Story that makes a game unique. And maybe that has become my problem with Nintendo.
Well, in Europe Nintendo has the strong Aura of Kiddy Gaming. My niece (6) and my nephew (4) already got their own DS and have much fun with it. There are practically no pure gaming stores in Austria, so you have to buy them in Department stores. And if you browse through the shelves you can almost only find kiddy games. I searched through the whole Saturn and was unable to find a Copy of "Dragon Quest Swords" or the Chocobo game.. Impossible to find, I had to buy them via Amazon.
Hmm, another strong point is that the Wii is almost free of that "it must have online gaming" craze. I enjoy single player experience and offline coop.
Hmm. If there were more story centric games (like JRPGs) and less focus on Motion Control (or better total lack of) I would definitely spend more gaming hours on my Wii (I played maybe 100 hours in almost 3 Years...Ouch). That, and that my wife always laughs at me when I start the Wii up. Its kind of ironic, because I thought that she would like the Wii more than the PS3 and that I could play the Wii Games together with her. But in Fact she only wants to play the PS3 with me (Resident Evil 5, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Lego Games, etc.).
In Fact, that Wii Controller is the reason why I would pick the PS3 Version of a game if I had the choice between Wii and PS3, even if the Wii would cost € 40 and the PS3 € 60. But I am not getting the PS Move either, so that is not a Nintendo bias. I just tried motion gaming and it fails to deliver anything to me. Even to think of a motion-controlled only Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts gives me the creeps.
Sure, the Wii sells millions of games. Super Mario Bros on the NES deserved to be one of the top selling Games...it was a masterpiece. Wii play is just a bunch of minigames and wii sports is not much better. I somehow fail to understand why people are so excited about those million sellers. Wii Party will not be much better. When I think of the PS1, I think about games like Final Fantasy 7-9, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Spyro, Crash, Gran Turismo, etc... Games that really deserved those sales because there was so much depth in it. Nowadays there are some cheap minigames in the Top 10 of the Wii and so many people are going crazy about those sales figures and how they "smash" their competition. Quality just doesn't equal quantity.
I hope you guys can enjoy your Wii more than I. Have fun with it. Well, maybe if I have a child someday it could enjoy the Wii more than I can, but that could take 6-10 years (has to get born first and then some time until it would be old enough for gaming) from now on. But I am sure that my Wii will still be functioning in 10 years, I suppose. My first 60 GB launch PS3 YLOD on me last month... (on September 11...)
