And without any real good software releases
The lowest year for Wii would be an amazing year for PS3 and 360 |
It used to be more than the competition combined. What happened?
Anyhow, we'll have to wait and see how the Wii does this holiday to really determine how much ground they've lost.
They have interesting bundles coming. That could boost sales.

I would have never thought about the Wii being discontinued any time soon but even Iwata is acknowledging lackluster sales? Interesting. I don't think another price cut can do much, and the system has already bundled It's best options (Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort) so it will be really interesting to see Christmas sales. It still looks like it will have no problem surpassing the PS1 sales, but surpassing the PS2 is in jeopardy.
Will we see a Wii 2 in late 2011 or even 2012 if sales continue to plunge?
It's just that simple.
They need to advertise the shit out of Donkey Kong and Epic Mickey this christmas. Advertise it Everywhere! Come on Nintendo you have the money.

Umm where have you been. Nintendo has said many times its home platforms have a lifecycle of 5 years. 2011 will be the fifth year. Infact I suspect N6 will launch later than expected in Spring 2012 due to the 3DS being pushed off till Spring 2011. Nintendo will not likely release both its home and portable next gen platforms in the same year. Now you'd argue why not Winter 2011. Well I just told you why. The 3DS will need at least one Christmas season in stock (No shortages) to gain a significant market share. If N6 was released it would cannabalize the 3DS stealing sales from Nintendo handheld. Another good reason is Nintendo won't have enough N6 units manufactured to really supply the market, Nintendo would sell out all its stock over Christmas but it would still sell out if released in spring so why should Nintendo launch new hardware during the Christmas season? In the end I think Iwata is pretty much confirming N6 for next E3, when Nintendo heads start saying their platform is waining then you know their next offering is right around the corner |
You do make some good points. However since the Wii has been a massive success I originally thought before hearing Iwata's concerns Nintendo would extend the Wii's Shelf life to over the normal five years, but now I can't be sure even with the eminent release of the 3DS It's possible Nintendo might come up with a new revision for the current Wii or maybe an entirely new console.

Isn't it outselling the PS2 at this point in it's lifecycle?
It's kinda odd to suggest it won't have as good a lifecycle as something it's outselling.

The Wii has been down in sales because in the past few months there weren't any "must haves" for the system. I'm saying the obvious.

Gaming community mentality gets a lot of things twisted.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs
Such bad timing for the new Zelda. It will be released in Spring 2011 and a couple of months later we'll see the announcement of the next Nintendo console.
Zelda Swords will immediately feel old and I will start craving for the "true" nex gen Zelda again.
