Forums - Sales Discussion - CBC: About 1.5 million PS3s sold in Canada. Hoping to double that by 2012

Great number... PS3 GO GO!!!

Around the Network

I think the PS3 might be more popular in Canada than the 360. From personal observations, I know more people now that own a PS3 than a 360 (there is some overlap).

I have a theory as to why the PS3 is more popular. Canadians are more tight with their money than Americans. Stats show that Canadians have less credit card debt and save more than their American counterparts.  American gamers couldn't wait for the next gen to come and just had to jump in in 2007 to play Halo 3. And they would frequently buy new Xbox 360s after getting the dreaded RRoD. My guess is Canadian gamers were more patient for the Playstation and were much less likely to put up with this faulty hardware shit. I didn't get an Xbox 360 until the 360 hardware was more reliable (I have a Falcon model). I and many other gamers were aware of how bad the situation was with the Xbox 360 hardware. And the newer Xbox 360 models arrived much later in Canada than they did in the states. Canadian gamers had to wait a long while for Falcon and Jasper model 360s to replace the old stock on the shelves.

And while the hardware situation improved with the 360, many Canadian gamers to this day are distrustful of Xbox hardware. Even when I kept repeatedly telling Xbox skeptics over here that the newer model 360s are much more reliable (the ones with the Falcon, Jasper or Valhalla chipsets. The Slims come with Valhallas and the Valhalla chipset runs the coolest and uses the least energy), they still don't trust the brand. Microsoft really screwed up their reputation outside the United States due to their past mistakes.

1.5M PS3s sold in Canada sounds about right considering VGChartz is reporting 15M for Americas.

Actually I did a bit of a breakdown last month and it would seem to show that we're undertracking PS3 in Canada (and most likely Latin America) by a fair margin.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=3599796

As of the end of July we only have Canada at about 1 million, and Latin America at about 650k. I strongly suspected Latin America is off by a fair bit since GOW3 sold about 50k in Brazil and probably over 100k in all of LA, not to mention PES 2010 likely selling over 150k.

According to NPD Pa3 is at 13M in U.S so 1.5M Shipped in Canada is pretty much possible and VGC numbers are pretty much fine.

So around 14.2 M in NA and 800K in Others Americas.

NPD is at 13,160,196 as of the end of August, VGC has Americas at 14,864,757. A difference of 1,704,561. If we had Others Americas, Latin America, at 800k (which is what I strongly suspect the actual LA install base is) that would mean Canada would only be at about 900k. Barely even half of what's shipped there, or in other words about 2 years worth of sales. In addition to that, GOW3 still sold over 250k in Canada (225k initial shipment) which is an inexplicably high attach ratio with an install base that size. Finally, they mention in the article that PS3 is at 38 million and 360 at 41 million so most likely the 1.5 million figure is shipments to the end of June, so in all likelihood sell-through is probably on par or marginally higher than that by now.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

I think loves2splooge has made a reaonably good point, i think they just need to get a few more big games out like GT5 and Killzone 3, and next year will be theirs, however imo 3D and Move dont seem like they can push the hardware that far. however it seems like next years PS360 line up will not do anything to stem the 360 fears in Canada...

PS3 had sold about 1.2m in Canada according to some figures I have through 2009, compared to 2.3m for Wii and 1.9m for X360 through 2009. So through Sept 2010 1.5m is a totally realistic figure for PS3. Figure Wii is at least 2.6m through the same period, and X360 probably 2.3m or so - but I havent found 2010 figures for Canada yet.

Canada is fairly similar to the UK as a market, with the caveat that pre-WIi Nintendo systems did better in Canada relative to population than in the UK.

Playstation All-Stars is one of the best games I've played this gen, and is the most fun I've had in a game this gen.

I live in Canada (Québec) and most of my friends, co-workers and family have PS3. In fact I only know one friend that have a 360.

I wonder if the 360/PS3 ratio is the same in both country.

At the moment, I think Canada is more like europe then U.S..

Last time i saw 360 numbers it was far away for Ps3 like Ps3 500K 360 800 or 900K so NO Ps3 isnt winning in Canada... 360 is os better Wii...

No they didnt screw anything and NPD is gonna prove that 360 is destroying PS3 in Canada later this year... Hopefully they show numbers... But 360 >>>> Ps3 in Canada by FAR margin... u guys shouldnt even think otherwise because u will be wrong but hey dont be OMFG when u see NPD Canada Report i learn u but the gap is probably bigger than 1M.

But whatever u guys still believe in God go ahead i dont blame ya... oh and Report.

No it doesnt suck its the best service and they might be in their 3rd 360 ( i doubt they bought 3 360s probably warranty covered the problem) but a minority is changing to Ps3 and when they change they will be back after seeing how Psn isnt as great as Xbox Live.

We have heard that many times but would you pay for Live if online gaming was for free?
