well no, they don't need a new hardware platform to implement better co-op online through their games.  But I don't really expect that to happen until we do see a new hardware platform.

3DS is taking a pretty ingenious approach, with a heavy focus on "pushed" online content and incidental/local communication, o at least we know Nintendo recognizes some of the core problems with their current infrastructure and are working towards something better.  Bodes well for Wii 2 imo.

So Nintendo is supposed to copy the features of their competitors until they get the sales?

So it's good to be unoriginal when it comes to "core" games?

No Nintendo doesn't need to copy the competition. They need to offer most of the same services in a uniquelly Nintendo way.

Co-op gameplay is like saying companies copied multiplayer from Pong. Nobody is suggesting Nintendo steal the achiement and trophy systems from Sony and Microsoft, but they should give gamers some sort of reward system. Co-op and multiplayer online gameplay should now be standard and a ranking/achievement/trophy system should be added.

I remember when Nintendo showed off New Super Mario Bros for the Wii. After the trailer I was sure 99% positive that Nintendo would incorporate online co-op. I turned out to be wrong, Nintendo is going co-op more and more with upcoming titles like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby Epic Yarn, but why no online co-op? these games would be amazing if they also had online co-op.

Pachter is right Nintendo does need to exsert itself in the market as being online competitive. They have a browser they have NetFlix they have Virtual Console and WiiWare now all they need is a rewards system (Notice I never said ranking system, Nintendo should find a new and unique way to reward gamers) online co-op and multiplayer (First party titles lead the way for third parties) and lets not forget tweaking the friend code system to be more consumer friendly.

Lost the argument right there.

There hasn't been a single offline multiplayer game in 9 years that has made me want to visit a friends home with it just to share the exprience.

THAT IS how crappy the console exprience has been in the past 9 years and how sad it is for them to be such utter crap that the consumers of them think they need an online mode.

"It's good but would have been better with online."

"This game needed online."

Yea...

I think it bodes poorly, actually. This is PictoChat redux, and all of this push content was promised for Wii, but really didn't go anywhere meaningful

I'm not the kind to really care about online multiplayer, but i'm not seeing a sign that Nintendo's going to fix that. This push content is good, but the core of the experience needs to be there, too.

Also, if Nintendo had a new online network in place, they would have trotted it out prominently at the event on the 29th. There's no proof that WiFi Connection isn't going to be back in force, unchanged as ever.

Like others have said, if they keep LOCAL multiplayer but add online (like Mario Kart) , then i would welcome it, but having Online only is crap.

I guess I would need proof that Nintendo fans are clamoring for online capabilities. Or is Pachter just trying to manipulate opinion for the developers.  Why is this guys opinion so important for the industry?

Online multiplayer is a really nice feature, but its importance is greatly over-stated ... If you look at the top 20 best selling console games of any year very few are really known for their online multiplayer.

In contrast, the importance of local multiplayer is greatly under-stated ... Many of the biggest games of the generation, and most of the break-out hits, have had a solid local multiplayer experience.

And this is why I maintain it's dumb to just drop local from Call of Duty on the Wii. I mean drop it for assuming gamers don't want it, instead of understandable tech reasons.
