well no, they don't need a new hardware platform to implement better co-op online through their games. But I don't really expect that to happen until we do see a new hardware platform.
3DS is taking a pretty ingenious approach, with a heavy focus on "pushed" online content and incidental/local communication, o at least we know Nintendo recognizes some of the core problems with their current infrastructure and are working towards something better. Bodes well for Wii 2 imo.
