Forums - General - Is NetFlix going to improve soon?

As a Canadian I just got the NetFlix service as it has just barely been brought to Canada. Right aways I was dissapointed by the movie and tv show selections. I searched for days looking at some movies and shows I realized their were alot of movies I had heard of but never thought were worth the rent.

I also found that some movie series I wanted to watch were partially availible like example Resident Evil Extinction is availible but the first two are not. Then one season of a TV show I wanna watch is availible but the three earlier seasons are not.

I also noted that not a single big title released in the last few years is availible except maybe Marley and Me. That made me wonder are their more movies availible for stream in the United States?

Remember here in Canada we will not be getting physical copies mailed only streamable movies. In the US are their better movies availible via stream? Is their something to look forward too or is this as good as NetFlix gets?

That's how it was initially when I got Netflix here in the good 'ol USA, too.  It had a few good recent movies and lots of old stuff that you had to sift through.  I was decent but not too impressive.  It didn't take long for it to start getting all kinds of content from tons of big networks and recent movies, too.  Hopefully Canadian Netflix will experience similar growth, too.  Sooner, rather than later.

The streaming movies cost alot for netflix because they have to buy the right to host them.  It's slowly getting a better selection and it makes more since for them to ge the rights to newer movies and movies that can get for cheap.  Their mail order selection is much better because they don't have to buy the rights, just the DVD's at retail cost.  Well that's what I read in WIRED.

Since I have had netflix (on and off for atleast a year) The streaming selection has only improved! You do run into the only 2 of 3 of a series being on there quit a bit though

How does that apply? As far as I know Netflix pays for the rights to its movie from the movie makers.

NetFlix pays the movie distributers (Publishers) and in Canada their are many different distributers. Many distributers here are not the same as those in the US, though for the most part they are. But I think NetFlix might have problems securing the Canadian rights. Being a seperate country with seperate laws and such this could complicate things.

Distribution rights in Canada are different then in America. The copy right laws also differ. Do American's even have Alliance Atlantis? A major Canadian distributer.

I just hope that NetFlix is able to boost their Canadian service if it indeed is much better in the US (Streaming only). I'm sort of suprised that NetFlix didn't get some higher ranking titles on the Canadian service before launching it. I can only imagine how popular the service would be with titles like Get Him to the Greek or Iron Man 2.

I understand there would be differnt companies, but none the less they should be able to buy the rights for the movies from who ever owns them in Canada.  It started off slowly in the US too as they had to build their catalogue of movies up.

(I shouldn't have said movie makers, I meant who ever own the rights to said movie, as far as I know that can be varying people depending on circumstances)

Netflix streaming, in the US anyway, is under the same rules as HBO, Showtime, and the like.

So for example, if a publishers knows a movie is going to be played on network TV, they well tell the cable movie stations that they can't play that moved for a month.

There are blocks of time, all the time, that some movies are lot allowed to air. For this reason, you will see things come and go on Netflix Streaming.

As for major movies, I just checked, and right now the top DVD/BD movies released this week are not up for streaming.

Sorry bud. How much does it cost in CA?

it is 7.99 in canada
