I ALMOST have my rail system up and running; unfortunately, the ambitious Farm Island terminal is a complete mess no longer automated (you have to get out and move to another track). 

On the plus side, it's a safe and scenic walk along the track!

UPDATE:  Relatively minor alterations to the system proved successful.  I was hoping to make something where you "drop down" into the position where you can boost from, but it seriously messed up the booster to have that rigged up right next to it (apparently).  So now I've just put in a hard stop in the track, and you get up and walk to the booster. 

I still think the problem may be solvable in principle, but I don't think it would work for a train station of small/moderate proportions. 

Meanwhile, the switch that determines destination is fully functional but no longer in a good position.  I'll fix that soon but

My hilltop house now has a 46-furnace foundary with like a dozen workbenches and a plethora of storage space, as well as a full-scale barracks. If anybody is interested in laying claim to a place in the barracks (mostly just for shits and giggles), feel free to let me know. I'll put up your name plate according to barracks regulations. ;D

While exploring the large cave system under the spawn point, I stumbled on some extremely weird areas, that seemed to be constructed but were very pointless (at first I thought it was a dungeon that somehow glitched out).  Then I found out it was an apparently unfinished and abandoned section of Ben's underground complex. 

The point of this story is that I was humbled by the reminder of how pitifully simple my rail system is compared to his opulent subway.  And yet, where does his go?  What does it actually connect?  I'll be investigating this and more, but I've already found out one thing:  he appears to have been using the "glitchy carts moving in circles at warp 9" which is a poor solution even if not for the fact it slows down the server. 

Questions on my mind: 
--Extent and current state (functionality, repair) of Ben's system (I will be checking this out)
--Ditto, wick's line
--Any other railways already in place?
--The actual demand for a substantial rail system
--Related:  will traffic justify unidirectional track (two one way lines) instead of "one line, one user"? 

I will be researching rail station mechanisms -- I already have an idea for a potential fix for my earlier inability to automate the stop.  But although I'd probably be willing to undertake construction of a "modest" line (nothing like the "construction per meter traveled" that Ben has) I pretty much blew my meager stockpile of iron on what I've already made.  If I were to do this, should I rely on donations or "mod magic"?  Or just not do it unless I can personally pony up the resources? 

Also, do people have objections to the elevated train style (i.e. they'd like them underground out of sight)?

This I have got to see.  But first I need to finish with the cave before I forget how to navigate it.

My track next to the 1-up is just a quick way for me to get to and from the sky bridge.

I can't remember who built the one going to my house on the other side.
