Forums - Sales - Inafune: Lost Planet 2 underperforms

If i remember correctly, they wanted it to sell like 3 to 4 million.

The original projection was 3.7 million (lol).  Capcom eventually kept paring that down until it was just 2.2m at last count, and the game ended up shipping just 1.5m (and will likely never ship another copy).

For legitimate "Capcom flops" on consoles this gen, I'd say it's just...

  • We Love Golf (Wii) somewhat significant, should've made it mascot based
  • Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes (Wii) PS2 port, not a huge loss
  • Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (PS3) 360 port, not a huge loss
  • Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop (Wii) outsourced on the cheap, not a huge loss
  • Bionic Commando (360/PS3/PC) significant
  • Spyborgs (Wii) somewhat significant
  • Dark Void (360/PS3/PC) significant
  • Lost Planet 2 (360/PS3) significant
...and upcoming...
  • Lost Planet 2 (PC) "free" port essentially, not a huge loss
  • Dead Rising 2 (360/PS3/PC) could go either way imo
  • DmC (360/PS3) lol
  • Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor (360) but it's subsidized by MS anyway

There is no way Dead Rising 2 flops. It'll be big in America. Plus it's a good game. I see legs.

D.R.2 won't flop but won't even come close to what Capcom wanted...remember they said that they wanted Dead Rising 2 to be very successful so that it could replace Resident Evil as its #1 franchise...LOL.

I wonder if Lost Planet 2 is actually in the red. While it didn't reach expectations, it will surpass 1 million soon. I imagine it will have decent legs as well.

It would be a real shame it they can't even break even.

Lost Planet 2 sold 510k on PS3 and 440k on 360. These numbers aren't great, espceially as the first sold 1.84 million on the 360 and 500k on the PS3. I don't think Dead Rising 2 is actually going to do much better.

I guarantee Dead Rising 2 will do MUCH better.

Why? Great reviews from major publications.

Dead Rising 2 also had a much better opening week in EMEAA than Lost Planet 2 did. I expect the same from NA.

i don't think they will lose money on lost planet 2 probably break even but they obviously wanted to grow lost planet into a major franchise like Ubisoft  and ND  with assassins creed 2  and uncharted 2 have  grown  there series  but any more than 2mill was always going to be a struggle especially since the first  wasn't multiplat to begin with and the games don't seem to have any endearing characters or story to drive it along as an on going series.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

I like Capcom a lot, and Dead Rising 2's numbers weren't bad for Europe, but I'm sure Capcom were hoping for better. It's a more common pattern on the HD consoles of a game having a huge opening then disappearing, it's less likely to see the legs that Nintendo games and massive franchises like COD have. Anyway, we'll see how the rest of the world embraces it.

capcom seems to be slowly going down hill.

just wait for the new DMC with ninja theory and see how much that flops.

Well as I said, let's see! I'm not doing the game down or saying I want it to do badly, I'm just saying, let's see how it does. LP2 did undersell, and with the EMEAA numbers for DR2, I should imagine Capcom have worries. But time will tell.

Hmmm... Capcom had flops and crap games in the past gens too. I never considered them great per se, but every now and then they put out a really good game. It usually begins with or ends with Street Fighter or involves zombies.

Ninja Theory seems to be a great developer. Worst case scenario, their rendition of DMC will be as bad as past games in the series. I can't imagine that will happen!
