Forums - Nintendo - My hypothesis on why the 3DS price is high

DISCLAIMER: This is a hypothesis, not a theory, meaning this is all based on observation and speculation, and not necessarly facts.

Many people are not happy with the high price the 3DS was announced to launch at, including myself. But I think I see a reason, besides the announced-by-Nintendo obvious, on why the 3DS is launching at $250-300.

The DS

Nintendo wants to keep selling the DS as a good alternative while making a profit on all hardware. Some families can't afford even the DSlite, so cutting prices for the DS and releasing the 3DS alongside would keep DS sales steady. Enough to still make profit and maybe have the ability to say it outsold the PS2.

Then, when DS sales finally die out, the 3DS can have a repeat of the PS2 and start releasing the REALLY good games (face it, not all the announced titles will be out day 1) alongside a price drop that puts the console price more mass-market friendly. The sales will spike just like the DS to DS lite jump, and all will be perfect and happy in the world of handheld Nintendo systems.

I hope I make sense.

PSP2 might ruin that pretty plan if it comes alongside a better pricetag than 3DS.

Why do you keep making these assumptions? We know absolutely nothing about the price for the 3DS except in Japan and we can't make a direct comparison.

here is why the 3DS is priced at what it is

- Glasses free 3D

- Motion controls

- Plays 3D movies

- Internet browser

- Takes 2D photos

- Takes 3D photos

- packed in with 2GB SD card

- Gamecube level graphics

- Multitasking

- Access to 3DS Virtual Console

- Access to 3D Classic games

- Access to 3DSWare

- Access to DSiWare

- Backwards compatible with DS/DSi

- Automatically shares data when in 'sleep' mode

- Online gameplay

and THATS why it costs what it does

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
It already has better visuals than GC or Wii by looking at Capcom games and that MGS3 demo because of the more advanced functions in the GPU while being a very decent Polygon pusher all on it's own.
...to sum it up: Technology costs Money
“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
