awesome, I still have my launch PS3. I'll get it repaired if it dies though.

Fun story about that: Turns out Sony charges $150 to even look at a PS3 that's out of warranty, and any repair parts that must be ordered get added to that price. It would have cost me $200 to get it fixed, whereas Gamestop gave me $200 for it, and then I bought a Slim for a total cost to me of only $100.

Really?
I've received two refurbished units between the two PS3s I've sent in for repair: my original 60GB SKU and a 40GB SKU that belonged to my brother. Both were about a $160 charge.

Yeah, see that would be fine if the problem was something simple. For me, it was my motherboard, or the power supply. Either way it was expensive. It stopped spinning discs properly, and still wouldn't even after I replaced the entire Blu-ray Drive and Drive Board. I'm relatively tech savvy, and that really only leaves one option. It would have been a very expensive repair, and it was an old 20GB PS3 with no wifi anyway, so I figured I'd go ahead and upgrade.
I can no longer play my PS2 games, but with Persona on PSP and soon 3DS, MGS3 coming to 3DS, and the Ico Collection, all the PS2 games I ever feel like replaying no longer require a PS2 to play, so no loss there.
