Of course that too much, but that is launch price. It makes business sense to overprice something when you first release it.

No it doesn't make business sense to overprice something when you first release it.

Does really, because all the fanboys will buy it almost immediately. When sales start to tail off a bit after launch, then you drop the price to get everyone else interested, after youve already filled the business bank account will some extra cash.

DS sales are driven by parents picking up something for kids to waste time with during boring tasks for kids.  I have 3 kids and they get to play DS when they are on long car rides or waiting like at a Dr. office sort of things.  No way I would pickup 3 of those until they are closer to $100.

How many DS/DSi/DSiLL do your kids have?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

If I was interested in a handheld, 299$ would be too much. You could get a mini laptop for that price.

299? *thinks of girls surrounding NiKKoM to play with his 3DS*

Yeah.. it has a shot for me to get laid.. definitly worth 299....

Although I'm probably not going to buy it, I think it's a good price for what you get. It's the first 3D handheld. When you compare the price with smartphones, it's not too expensive. Smartphones cost between €400-800 which is much more than a handheld console. But then agian, low price is one of the reasons why handhelds are still selling well. $300 isn't really low. But after 1 or 2 years the price will drop to $200-250, which is a price point where the most people are going to buy the handheld.

i think nintendo know what they are are doing in the hanheld world, the DS is still selling bundles,

they can ease the 3DS into the market anyway they like,i'd say they'll go for the option that makes them most money

Is gaming in Japan really that much more expensive than in America? If the system launches for 299 in America would you buy it? If it launches for 249 and the PSP2 does the same which will you buy?

This depends on the PSP2's features. If it was fully backwards compatable, touch screen enabled , At least as powerful as the 360. Cheaper software then the origional, NetFlix enabled. Then I would buy it at launch for 300$. But fact is Sony is just known for subpar quality when it comes to their products, it would take alot of features like those listed above to get me to purchase a PSP2.

The quality of Sonys products are not bad imo. Just the price, seriously everything from Sony costs more than it should. Both electronics and consoles, the current PS3 price is the exception and its probably because they are still last.

My friends who bought PSP's at launch all had dead pixels and one had to return his twice. Then Adam Sessler imported one from Japan and the buttons were partially in the screen. I heard about  constant problems for about half a year. I ended up buying mine in 2008 after all the glitches were worked out.

It seems that with Sony products you need to wait a year or two for all the bugs to be worked out.

I had a launch PSP with no issues what so ever for over a year. I had a PSP2001 model with a dead pixel. I've had 3 DS Lites all of which had this annoying had this annoying clicking when opening after a couple of months. My limited edition D/P DS had some unusual lighting issue that had the brightest setting only as bright as Lv2 on other DS Lites. My Brother had a DS Lite with a raised D-Pad that forced him to either press harder or or keep his thumb in the center pushing the entire D-Pad and leaning it into the direction he wants like a joystick. We noticed this right out of the box.

Shit happens. New and late models.

OT: If it's over 200$ without a great game, I'll probably just get the PSP.

When exactly do you think the price will drop? Well it's still not coming till next year. There's plenty of time for me to save for it. Almost everygame announced I want to play so I'll just save a little each week.
