Forums - Microsoft - EA: Kinect is for games 'We can't even imagine'

It’s “something of a chicken and egg thing”. That’s the challenge that Microsoft faces with the Kinect motion camera, according to EA’s European senior VP Jens Uwe Intat.

Specifically, the exec thinks that relying on conversation of existing IP and game types to push the appeal of Kinect is a mistake. Instead, developers need to throw and the text books and think again about how to build titles for hardware that doesn’t include a controller.

“At the end of the day, this is something of a chicken and egg thing,” he told MCV. “If you have a machine that is very high spec, connected with an important online aspect, you’re automatically going to attract the people who are more keen on technology. To then open up that space and say ‘hey, now we actually make games that are easier to play’.

“I think it’ll take quite a while for our developers to fully understand and embrace all the things Kinect can actually do. I think right now a lot of the thinking right now is very limited, where we’re trying to translate a racer or shooter on the Kinect platform – but that’s not all that Kinect is going to be about. Kinect is about games that we can’t even imagine today.

“I would expect in all the games where you use a device – be it a gun, a steering wheel or whatever – I’m not sure those are going to be the core strength. You can play them with Kinect, but the real strength will actually come to bear with stuff where you only use your body. Dancing and fitness are excellent example, because those are things where you would prefer not to have any devices in your hand. Strategy might even work well – while today you can to use a mouse and push buttons, I can easily see you intuitively with your body orchestrating a game.

“And that new way to look at how you would, for example, orchestrate and direct a football team is going to open completely new ways to play those games and, again, get new audiences into gaming.”

How long do you all think it will take?

i may sound like a broken record , but i think we have to wait and see.

I live for the sword, the steel, and the gun...

I think you are exactly right. I'm quite interested to see where they can take it. It's such an innovative concept, and i love the tech involved.

Kinect could be really interesting, but nothing announced so far interests me, but it really is early days yet.

A problem would be if they release shovelware and it sells well because there's not other choice, there's a possibility that shovelware and kiddie games would saturate the market, drowning out good quality games - which i think could be really impressive with the technology.

like I (we) have said

outside the fitness and the dancing game, kinect line-up is useless (like the Move one)

so I kinda agree with EA

Time to Work !

That's actually what I'm most interested in seeing. I'm not stating that I don't want kinect to succeed, but the more perverse side of me wants to see what new kinds of shovelware can be created with kinect. We've seen evolutions in storytelling, gameplay, online functionality, and individual genres, so I think shovelware is way overdue for an evolution of its own. Shovelware 2.0 if you will; new and innovative ways destroy a gamer's soul. This new strain of shovelware should prove more resistant to common sense than the old one, but we'll have to wait and see.

What Kinect is really going to test is how creative the current developer community really is.

I'd imagine that the majority of them will really struggle to break gaming paradigms, as the proliferation of 'me too' titles that we see now (and have seen in previous gens) prove to some extent.  Thus we'll see cash-ins where devs/pubs try to take the easy route.  My question is will MS ALLOW that to happen, because ultimately it won't help the paradigm shift they are trying nurture with Kinect.  So why allow Shovelware 2.0 (?

Will developers struggle to come up with ways to control games. There aren't that many combinations you can use with your body while standing.

I'd love to see the ability to scan a toy gun and use that in a game, imagine that! you could go out and buy any toy gun and use it as a peripheral.

or maybe a gun that uses a flashing LEDs on the front to show you are shooting - it won't be able to see trigger pulls but can see flashing lights

Ok... maybe guns are a little obvious... toy swords?

Toy swords and guns sound cool scruff.

MS removed the ability to scan in items, they said so themselves, so do not expect that from Kinect.

In a future iteration of the technology maybe, but not this one.
