So, Sony is getting a new PS3 bundle in Oct right?  Are they dropping the price by $50 or what?  What is the general consensus as to the effect that the new bundle will have?

The bundle is already out isn't it, assuming you mean the 320Gb with a free Move bundle and a copy of sports champs?  Though there is a GT5 bundle incoming for Japan, and also one for PAL.  Not sure about NA.  Several stores near me(well, the ones i've been in) are sold out of PS3's at the moment, though I think this could be related to the short supply of Move(Moves?).

It went up by 10000 in 2 days in a single region. Helping it to outsell the generation leader.

Gran Turismo 5 is the next (big) move for the PS3.
