@cabretti if their making more games this gen how can the last gen been more frequent???? thats an oxymoron. THey make money on the casual market, third parties also, we might not like it but the casuals sure do. CDs are cheaper than cartridges, thats a fact, would I go for the cheaper alternative and make more money or go the expensive route to please the ninty fans??? simple buisness decision ok so games have sucked in the past, but what about the ones that dont??? you gonna punish them cause others blow??? thats not helping anyone if there can be a hundred raquet sports then I want more light gun on rail games dammit
It's true, a lot of the quality or value is just missing.
My three favorite games on wii at the moment are Little King Story, Muramasa, and NSMB.
Those games possess a quality that I expect from a game.
I also got boy and his blob, sin and punishment 2, and metroid:oM. M:oM is a good game, but the other two were a real let down. It's the same kind of feeling that I used to get from DS games where after a portion of playing the game I would wonder if I just got cheated out of my money. Seriously Boy and his blob feels like a flash game, no where near as magical as the original and I just feel like it treats me like a child.
Anyhoo that's my take. All the Nintendo games feel like they're worth the price, but a lot of other games just feel cheap somehow. I'm not sure how to explain it. It's different from being a bad game. They're not BAD games, they just feel cheap, in a way.

I just finished up A Boy and His Blob 100%.
I never played the original, but the only thing I ever hear about it was that is was the poster child for "Nintendo hard" games.
I thought the new version did capture a magical innocence. It certainly took me back to my childhood. The artwork reminded me of old cartoons I used to watch. The interactions between the boy and blob were heart warming. The cutscenes at the beginning of the game where the boy and blob meet, and the cutscenes at the end of the game where the boy and blob part ways where touching.
The game is certainly not without flaws, especially in the gameplay department, but I thought it was a pretty decent game. The game launched at a $30 price point, and I bought it for between 10 and 15. The game was budget priced, and it is certainly worth it for that money I think.

I know it's a long thread, but I just had to ask about this point - am I reading it wrong, or are you trying to say, that the N64 was underpowered and underfeatured in comparison to the PS1, and "faceplanted" as a result? Since I obviously think neither is true. The latter was definitely not the case in America. I mean, the 4 best selling games of the gen (Mario, Kart, Goldeneye, Zelda) were all from the N64 in our region, topping anything the PS1 had. Unless you'd consider these casual games, of course... |
1. The N64 was indeed underpowered in comparison to the PS1, largely (though not only) due to the limitations of cartridges.
2. Nintendo consoles tend to punch above their weight if you look at only the best sellers, for obvious reasons. The N64 sold about a third as many units as the PS1 total.

See, I definitely see its merits... however, I think the game would be a much better experience for someone who was just starting out in gaming.
I like it, but it's not for me. Something I am realizing more and more with nintendo console games. Even some nintendo games make me feel like this, but not all of them.

I don't know about that. I think the unforgiving platforming and awful trial and error bosses would ruin the game for a lot of new gamers. (The only boss I found fun was the fifth/final boss.)

Really quick... POP: Forgotten Sands: Movie bombed, game lacked innovation, Wii version unpolished, game bombed on all systems (not just Wii) so it's obviously not a platform issue. - Have you played the title? Apparently not. It's very polished, TONS of content, innovative, looks great, well rated (better than the HD version). Yes, the movie bombed, yes PoP:FS bombed on all sytems but it bombed far harder on Wii despite being the best version and by far the best of kind on the system. TvC (UAS right?): Met it's modest expectations, so it doesn't really belong on this list. Should've done better in Japan, but then it also should've been budget priced there (like SSF4) and probably gotten a CCPro bundle. -It did exceed it's modest expectations, but again, this game is by far the best of kind on the system. It deserves far better sales. NMH2: Utter lack of western advertising and promotion, Ubi and RS really sent it to die. Jaded hardcore waiting for possible HD port up, JP release still coming (MMV expects 51k btw, lol, not happening, more like 5.1k). Neither did the first which did substancially better. Jaded hardcore is right. That's why all these games aren't performing as they should. NHL Slapshot: Looks/plays like shit, pandering/insulting product, zero promotion, feels like something that you'd buy off QVC. - Read reviews. Every single one says the opposite. Looks great, tons of fun to play. HUGE promotion in Canada (and likely other hockey markets). Silent Hill SM: Again zero promotion, already declined IP, Konami really failed to capitalize on what's a great game and got excellent media response. Still, it outsold the previous SH on 360/PS3, and the Wii version of SM far outsold the PS2/PSP versions, so again it's most likely not a platform issue. - Fair enough. Boom Blox 2: Rushed sequel, confused shovelware marketing, probably shouldn't have been a $50 product. Casual target audience doesn't respond well to annualized sequelitis (which EA seemingly doesn't understand). Boom Blox 2 wasn't rushed and stands head and shoulders over the original. FANTASTIC user-created content too! Closest thing Wii has to LBP. However, you're right about casuals not being interested in yearly sequels - too bad, this was one with a huge difference and really deserved a purchase. Tiger 11: Fundamentally damaged IP, bombed everywhere, so again, not a platform issue. Again, the Wii version - which has been the LEAD version and better selling version, with the MOST content and most innovation has bombed far harder and is now the worst selling version. You cannot reasonably argue it's not a platform issue. Not when the Wii version drops so much more than the other versions. What I will give it is that a lot of people got TW10 with WM and they probably can't be bothered to get TW11. Still, it's fall from grace on Wii is hard to understand. |
