Forums - General - Gay refugees, does YOUR country welcome them?

I'm pretty sure that "Are you a raving queen?" ISN'T one of the questions they have on refugee application, or immigration forms.

I haven't checked, but I'm also pretty sure that the countries refugees flee from tend to be the homophobic ones, and the countries refugees flee to tend to be the ones that don't pry into people's personal lives in that way.

There are countries, however, that have put in place HIV testing for immigrants from certain countries with a high HIV infection rates. But because in most countries where HIV has a particularly high prevalence it's widespread through the heterosexual population it's not really an "anti-gay by stealth thing".

I dunno, we'd probably welcome you... I mean we're Holland, after all, if any country would let you in, it'd be us. :-p

Refugees tend to be accepted into countries because they face some form of unjust persecution in their home country. In most western countries sexual orientation would have no impact on whether you are accepted as a refugee or not, and if you were being persecuted because you're gay that would (probably) be acceptable grounds to gain refugee status.

*snip*

Sorry, misread the OP.

I have no idea but I welcome gay men.

The more the better.

More chics available and less guys after them.

Gays ftw.

IMHO, every guy on earth should be gay despite me.

I want to read about that, I need lots of information and I don't know where to look.

questions like : list of countires that accept gay refugees? what kind of discrimination should be exhibited in my country that makes me a potential refugee? are there any educational or financial requirements from my part? what kind of tests I have to pass to be qualified as gay? and many other questions related to the situation.

I pretty appreciate the help in any form possible

Your country not only needs to have laws against homosexuality but you have to actually risk physical persecution and yet it still could be difficult to get asylum in Sweden based on those reasons. You'd also have to show strong evidence that you are in fact homosexual.

I think I get what you're asking about. If you're serious about this, it seems to me that Canada and the US are a good pick. One would have to contact the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and seek asylum, it's definitely possible and you wouldn't be the first to do it. Just to be clear, you're seeking asylum because you live in a place where it isn't exactly "safe" to be gay, correct?

I'd suggest contacting the UNHCR and going from there, they're sure to answer your questions. Though I must tell you that it is harder to go through with all this if you haven't actually faced persecution personally, and in the US case people actually have to physically be in the US to seek asylum, I read that here

I wish you the best of luck buddy :)

PS: my advice, don't go 'outing' yourself if you're not sure what might happen XD

PPS: This sounds so serious now that i've finished typing all this. Is everything OK dude? Are you asking for yourself?

Under UN obligations, pretty much every country is required to accept refugees regardless of sexual orientation or, pretty much anything else.

Granted, even countries like North Korea are signatories to these agreements.

Actually i'm fairly certain that HIV infection rates are only higher with gay people in rich first world countries.  Not likely to be the gay hating countries you'd flee from.
