Forums - Sales - Bungie calling out numbers for Halo Reach, saying they are WAY off.

daveJ said:

There is little to be told from the Bungie guys posts

EXCEPT confirmation that

MW2 asswoped halo - reach's sales

now this needs to be discussed, [smile]

why did microsofts number one franchise get such an asswhopping, how can microsoft improve this with the next halo game.

speaking as a halo fan I want to sit down and discuss but my ass is sore from all this asswhooping

Yeah cause thats believable >_>

All Halo Reach would have had to do to at least tie MW2 was release during the holiday season like MW2 did.

Well Nelson updated the top live games of the week and apparently he made a mistake, Reach was actually the most played game of the week with MW2 second and Halo 3 third.

Whew I can rest peacefully now

But can pirated copies play on xbox live?

As Bungies data seems to be about how many people were playing while logged into that right?

So if we look at their data it would indicated that Reach might have been undertracked here. Because if it did nearly x4 what Halo 3 did then how can their weekly numbers be the same? It is just a matter of time before Track/NPD etc all release the figures so i guess we will find out in a couple of weeks.

As for some peoples replies i think we might have some hypocrites in da house. Some are dissing Bungies stats and saying you can't trust company figures. But yet those same people diss VGC for not having the numbers Sony recently posted for console numbers. Can't have it both way's. And if i had to trust one company in the games business it would be Bungie without a doubt.

What are you talking about? I have yet to see anyone claim Bungies numbers are false. Stop trying to start trouble.

What people ARE saying ialo Reach outsold Halo 3 according to VGC, so that alone points to more sales than Halo, duh. People are then saying Live users may have increased which has nothing to do with sales but would increase UU for Halo Reach.

If the ratio of people who purchase dReach with a Gold account is greater than Halo 3 then in theory Reach could have actually sold less and these numbers still be accurate. Im not saying thats true, and no one is saying they dont believe Bungies numbers, theyre saying they dont agree with the OP extrapolation of said numbers to directly correspond with sales.

What "Same people" are claiming Bungies stats are false and also claimin gVGC should count Sonys shipped numbers? Really, im curious who those "same people" are, just starting trouble.

Some of the people questioning the numbers from Bungie are the same people who criticised this site for it's numbers at the last Sony numbers announcement. They may not have said it in exact words but you get the feeling from their posts they don't buy what Bungie have said.

How you read what i said and got to what you wrote is beyond me!

Bungies stats do not mean Reach had higher sales just more people playing it. As mentioned this is most likely due to the fact millions more consoles have been sold since Halo 3 and a lot of those will be on live. Until we get numbers from ndp/track etc we don't even need to talk about sales.

The point i made which obviously went over your head  is that you can't do the whole "But it is from a company release, it must be true!" thing, then when another does it question their data. It isn't about sales it is about having the same level playing field. If Bungie say they have xyz data then believe them. They are not the type of company to put a spin on it. They even admit first weeks numbers were below MW2 but say 2nd week it is ahead of it.  That to me is an interesting comment as indicates there are now more people playing Reach then MW2 (on 360). That is pretty impressive considering one has sold 11m and one has sold 3m.

So as for trying to start trouble, jeez do give over. It's friday, go out have some fun. Don't take the forum so serious...

You say its not about sales and in your post say these UU numbers can mean its undertracked Ive bolded it for easy reference to show that even in the same thread within a dozen posts you contradict yourself and your rationale. Are you purposfully being obtuse and aloof to what this thread is about?

Still i have yet to see people question Bungies numbers in relation to what Bungie is actually reporting on. No one is denying UU has increased, what we are saying to the OP is that you cant extrapolate that to increased sales of software.Thats the point of the thread, i honestly am in awe at your two posts because i really dont understand what youre getting at here, it seems to me you took a completely legit criticism of extrapolating sales like the OP is trying to do based on UU and tried to stretch it into a jab at PS3 owners for no reason and it looked silly since none of the discussion up to this point has involved the PS3, Sony or users commenting on shipment figures.

You call out the "same people" yet no one here is questioning any of bungies numbers because they arent sales, theyre UU. I think if youre going to try to start a flame war and drop comments like "the same people who want Sony shipped figures counted are denying internal numbers from Bungie" You better be able to back it up.

But holding a user accountable on an internet community and calling you out for vague, unsubstantiated claims to try to start trouble only causes you to attempt to insult my social life, which clearly means ive struck a nerve. Take care.

Zzzzzzz Get over yourself, your feel much better for it believe me!

If this is about activity on Xbox Live for the week of September 13th, then that is 1 day extra which Call of Duty has over Halo Reach. Of course it'll be slightly above Halo reach with a day's head start. What do you think people were playing before September 14th? Halo 3 and Call of Duty: MW2. It's not rocket science. People couldn't play Halo Reach on Monday, therefore they had to play something to keep them occupied.

No man Halo Reach beat MW2 by a purely massive amount for unique users the week it came out.

Why are they comparing players online to actual game's sold, nearly everyone plays Halo with multiple accounts on split screen.

I'm willing to guess that a large part of this is down to the number of people who use internet on consoles now as compared to Halo 3's launch.

Because the numbers look bigger and more impressive naturally.

But you have a good point, Halo with multiple accounts on split screen is pretty much the way to play Halo in a gaming household.

And yes; the number that means the most is ultimately how many copies the game sells, not that it isn't important to track how many people are playing a given game.

Here it is, directly from the mouth of Bungie.

Fortunately for us, our online team tracks every single aspect of Halo: Reach right down to shots fired, and our own internal data tells a very different story. To help put launch week into a little more perspective, we’ve prepared a handful of stats to compare and contrast Halo: Reach against our stalwart online juggernaut, Halo 3.

  • On Tuesday, 09/14/2010 at approximately 1:30 pm PST, just a few hours after launch, Halo: Reach’s online unique user count had already completely eclipsed Halo 3’s total tally for the entirety of the week (09/13 through 09/20).
  • To account for the same number of online players found in Halo: Reach during that same window (just six days), we had to run the numbers for Halo 3 going all the way back to 8/6/2010, encompassing a full 45 days of Halo 3 play!
  • Ultimately, Halo: Reach’s online population for the first week dwarfed Halo 3’s by comparison, snagging four times the number of total unique users and decimating Halo 3’s all time high of concurrent users by more than 65%.

And here are some more Halo: Reach specific numbers from week-one that are just all kinds of kick ass in their own right:

  • 70 Million Games have been played
  • 235 Million Player-Games have been played
  • 2 Million Files have been uploaded to File Shares
  • 5,901 man-years have been spent in online Reach games (sorry, Corporate America!)
  • 20 Million Daily challenges have been completed
  • 709,840 Weekly challenges have been completed
  • 165 Billion Credits have been earned

To say we’re grateful for your continued support would be an understatement. Our sources tell us that we’ve been the number one title on Xbox LIVE for the last seven days. You complete us.

Thanks a million for playing Halo: Reach. (Halo 3, too!). We’ll see you online.

if the 5901 man-years thing is accurate that means every single person who bought the game first week spent 12 hours online according to vgchartz sales, including the people who bought it during the end of the week. so ether it is undertracked by a lot or their estimation is very off, because there is no way that is the average considering only 35% of xbox owners play online, probably 50-60% for first week halo buyers, and 12 hours is a ridiculous time for 1-7days of owning the game except maybe for the really big fans.

That statement is not true, if you remember E3 when ps3 said that they have the most consoles connected to the internet, xbox 360 was at 73% while ps3 was at 78%. So at average, it is 73%, and that is alot of people who play online. So dont start saying things that have no sources or anything to back it up. To anyone who owns Halo Reach, go to the matchmaking lobby, select psyche profile, and let the map load. That is everyone who is CURRENTLY playing xbox live. Can't tell me that there isn't more online players for xbox 360...

I am one of the 1 million that pre-ordered Halo: Reach...Are you?

I think fightning over which console is better is stupid, they are both good consoles with some ups and downs.

Time to do some math. 73% of 43.4 Million=31,682,000 Yep, that is a really big number. Kinda sad how xbox 360's online users is tied closely to ps3's total sales (6,000,000). But, RROD and the banning of millions of xboxs shouldn't be a problem here because most people might of went out and bought a new xbox 360 or ps3.

Time of some more math. 78% of 37.8 Million= 29,484,000 Yep, this is also a really big number. Still, even though xbox 360 had it's heck moments, it still manages to trail ahead of the ps3. both sales and online.
