Forums - Sony - GT5 to Team with Honda in MASSIVE New York Times Square Event! It Begins...

apart from the car and GT-5, I'm stunned at the 3D presence.

Is there some sort of 3D consortium working on this? it seems the only things not in 3D there are the T-shirts lol

Did I complain about any of that?  No.  I just think this event in particular is stupid. (FYI, you're giving them way too much credit for some of those.  At most they helped tweak the exterior design on those cars they "collaborated" on.)

I'm a big fan of GT, I just think they could've chosen something better than the CR-Z.  The Paris Motor Show is right around the corner, and dozens of cars are on the verge of being unvieled.  Hell, Lamborghini's new Murcielago replacement is set to be unvieled along with all the other stuff I mentioned.

Who's to say Gt doesnt show up at the Paris Motor show too? Why not take the oppertunity to showcase your game with the debut of a new car. Shouldnt cost to much for them, so its basicly symbiotic relationship for both parties. Also its not just going to effect NY it will be on the web, tv, radio perhaps. So its a no brainer to do it.

Also the Gt franchise is not just about high end race cars, are you crazy? The game has had all types of cars cheap, muscle, high end, racing, f1, now carts. Thats part of its appeal i can race the car i own, my dad owned , my future car, my dream car, and my kids dream car. Its just nuts. Heck the weather trailer you'll see them show a volkswagon van race, how many of those types of races do you see on tv? GT is just about racing period. GT6 horse racing mark my words.

The X1 and the GT by Citroen were made exclusively for Gran Turismo 5, so yes, it's a collaboration. Unless you think Citroen and RBR just did it out generosity.

You realise the cars you mentioned aren't even in GT5, right? The CR-Z is. I think you're the stupid one.

Exclusively for GT?  Regardless, that doesn't mean they had any part in designing the car.  It's pretty complicated stuff (understatement of the decade?), and just beause they agreed to do it doesn't mean the played any role in it.  I'm not saying I don't think the GT and the X1 aren't fantastic ideas, but trying to pretend Polyphony did anything more than put the cars in game is ridiculous.  It was Citroen and Red Bull that spent countless hours designing the cars.  FYI, RB isn't making the X1 just for GT5.  They're doing it to create conversation about the increasingly restrictive rules in F1.  They create excitement and discussion about a "no limits" race car and force the issue with FIA.  That, and it's a great design excercise for their new engineers whose only experience has been designing Formula SAE cars, which aren't exactly at the level of any of the realms within Red Bull compete.

The only reason the CR-Z is in the game is because Honda is trying to market it.  This event does nothing for GT5.  As I pointed out, the CR-Z is the antithesis of a car you'd want to race.  Honda is trying to market this car to young people by making it seem "sporty."  Their logic is that young people play games, and if we put the car in a racing game it will hide the fact that this car has no appeal from an ethusiasts perspective at all.  Meanwhile, the inclusion of this car does nothing for GT because the only people interested in this car don't care about racing or peformance.  The two demographics have no overlap.

@HexenLord: My point is that this event does nothing for GT5 and is a waste of resources (another car they have to design, they've got to get demos ready for NY, etc.).

@Nyanks: See "Honda is trying to market this car to young people by making it seem "sporty."  Their logic is that young people play games, and if we put the car in a racing game it will hide the fact that this car has no appeal from an ethusiasts perspective at all. "

@JamaicameCRAZY: "Also the Gt franchise is not just about high end race cars, are you crazy? The game has had all types of cars cheap, muscle, high end, racing, f1, now carts. Reading comprehension is an amazing thing.  Here's what I said halfway up the page:
"Gran Turismo is about RACING.  It's about going as fast as you can.   I don't really define any of the cars I listed as "sports cars."  That wasn't the point  The point was that Honda has gone the direction of economical and utilitarian, basically as far away from the sport of racing as they can.  A FWD hybrid that's ridiculously heavy for its size and has 0 get up and go is the antithesis of the car anyone would want to drive in Gran Turismo, and anyone interested in the car isn't going to be looking at it for its performance."

A race car is a car designed with one thing in mind: the track.
A sports car is designed with racing in mind, and makes as few sacrifices for comfort and other normal things as possible.

None of the cars I listed are either of those things.  They are, however, not the antithesis of what a person might want to race in.  The group of people that like those cars and the group of people that like GT5 actually overlap.  This is not the case with the CR-Z which is little more that an Insight coupe.

You think advertising your product, which is all about cars, at an event where a car manufacturer is advertising one of their cars, in the middle of New York, with lots of exposure and foot traffic/passers-by, is stupid?

First, i dont try to insult your intellegence so i would appreciate it if you would show the same repect.

How is this not a response to this?

"the antithesis of the car anyone would want to drive in Gran Turismo, and anyone interested in the car isn't going to be looking at it for its performance."

Now i dont give a crap about what direction Honda has been going towards with their cars as of late. The Cr-z might not be the ideal car for racing but does that mean people dont want to race it no. You speak in absolutes when practicaly nothing is. Who's to say there isnt a Cr-z loving gt fan out there? You might not like or want the car but someone might.

You seem to have a typical racing game mentalitly that only true racing cars should be in a racing game and that everyday cars should just butt out. Any car can be a race car, thats what GT does thats why its the best (my opinion).

Telling me that GT is about racing when I said it was about racing shows a lack of reading comprehension.  I clearly feel that GT is about racing so that isn't the area where we disagree.

Let me give you a list of all the cars made by Honda known to be in GT5:

Integra Type-R (DC5-gen, ’04)
Acura NSX ('91)
NSX Type-R (1st gen, ’92)
NSX Type-R (2nd gen, ’02)
NSX (ARTA SuperGT, ’06)
NSX (Takata Dome SuperGT, ’06)
NSX (Raybrig SuperGT, ’06)
S2000
S2000 (Stephen Papadakis, ’05)

Notice that all of these are cars whose main focus is performance.  The Integra Type-R is the only FWD car in the list, and it's probably one of the most track-focused FWD cars aside from the Mini Cooper GP.  Among these cars, the CR-Z stands out like a sore thumb.  These cars are not all race cars.  Hell, three of them are stock street cars.  I do not believe that there should only be race cars in a game like GT5.  I thoroughly enjoy flogging production cars.  However, attempting to flog a car that was designed for the opposite of performance does not appeal to me or the great majority of people who enjoy this game.  I'm not going to deny that there might be a few odd people who want to race with this car, but they're not even a small minority, they're microscopic.  The ONLY reason this car is included is for marketing purposes for Honda.  GT gains nothing from this.  No one not previously interested in GT5 will suddenly want to check it out because it has a hybrid econobox.  That is my point.  I don't care that it's not a race car.  I haven't mentioned a single race car in this thread aside from the ones copypasta'd in that list.  I think it's stupid because virtually no car enthusiast would want to drive this car in a race setting.  It shouldn't be in the game for the same reason the Prius isn't.

@NomadBlue: GT isn't about cars.  You can't wax your car or change its oil.  You can't commute in it.  It's about racing.  That's an important distinction.  A CR-Z is not an appealing car to race.  It's mind numbingly slow (like, it makes a civic look fast), it's far too heavy for its size (meaning lazy response), and it's got a battery that can't be geared or anything so the thing is going to be even slower past 60 or 70.  So, even if you've got people who are interested in GT5, they're probably not going to be interested in using the CR-Z in game.  To make matters worse, very few people interested in owning a CR-Z are going to be into racing.  Even within its own segment, it's not exactly the car a car enthusiast would go with.  So you've got people who aren't interested in racing being shown a car that is designed for the opposite of racing in a racing setting.  Simply put, it's a recipe for absolutely zero interest.

Alright if your going to completely ignore or not understand my post, dont bother quoting or replying to it...

@ first line. i dont even get why you bring this up. The debate is clearly that you believe Gt should only have cars with "performance" in mind. While i believe that ANY car should be in it. Weaker cars can be upgraded or just raced as is. Which is one of the many things that makes GT (imo) the best racing game out there.

Remember A-spec points? The points you get rewarded for for not choosing the fastest or the best car but choosing the weaker car tuning it correctly and making the race a challenge, thats GT. So when you say flogging that tells me right there your not getting many of those or getting one of the many great things GT has to offer. So maybe you should go back and have another go at Gt4.

If you truely believe that Gt shouldnt just have racing type cars (also id like to clarify racing type cars. this to me mean means any car that is obviously geared toward racing as opposed to fuel economy, towing capacity, number of passengers able to be carried, basicly average cars) then we wouldnt be having this discusion because the CRZ is really no different from a performance stand point to cars in past editions.

Al la. 1963 Daihatsu Midget, 2004 DMC Delorean S2 (best car ever), 1983 Civic 1500 3Door 25i, 1949 Beetle 1100 Standard (Type II), 2001 Lupo 1.4, 2003 Accord Coupe EX, 1999 Insight. All of these were taken from a list of cars in GT4.

1) What you're talking about are normally called sports cars or sporty cars (depending on how much they compromise for creature comforts and the like).  I don't think that's necessarily all that should be in GT.  What I do think is that only cars that are fun to race should be in GT.  That's why I'm fine with classic cars like an old beetle or Mini.  Hell, I made it my mission to get as far in GT2 with a 60's Mini as possible.  I had a ton of fun

2) Flogging a car means to push the car to its absolute limit.  This is much easier to do (and sometimes more fun) with a car whose performance limit is lower.

3) All that stuff you're talking about in regards to "modding." Doesn't really apply.  One of the things I like about GT is the way they approach mods.  It's pretty realisitic.  If an engine couldn't stand up to a turbo, it's not an available option.  There's no balancing out cars through modifications.  You get what you might be able to expect out of the car in the real world (without having to figure out all the complex stuff like spring and shock rates, suspension geometry, the right tire compound and carcass design, how to fabricate the plumbing for a turbo, injector placement and number, etc.)  However, that points out another issue with the CR-Z.  There's not much you can do to it.  It uses the LEA for it's engine.  It's a horribly undersquare engine that can't make any power up top (because it's undersquare...) and can't really be bored out or anything.  The engine internals are too week to hold up to much boost (somewhere between 4-6 psi is probably its limit).  At most you might be able to get 140-150 horsepower out of it, with another 10 hp from the electric motor.  I'm betting it will come with a CVT in game, so there's no gearing that can be changed, plus the manual option is already geared so low to help it out in terms of power there's not much you can do.  You won't see any significant improvements because this car was not designed with any sort of performance in mind.  It's going to take forever to accelerate, and have lazy response for its size.  You won't be able to reduce the weight much because most of it comes from a hybrid drive train.

I'm all for taking out faster cars in a slower car that's well designed, but that doesn't mean I want to drive a car that's just plain bad.
