Just Cause IS a shit game so no objections here

I think this article downplays a major trend for Japanese gamers in recent years.  More specifically, home-console gaming doesn't seem as big there as it is out here in the "west".  The sheer success of titles like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest IX show that portable gaming has become very prominent there.  I think I've read that the gaming culture in Japan is more on the go (playing on trains and such) nowadays, rather than playing at home.

My question is, how many western developers have attempted to create portable games to capture more of the Japanese audience?

The only next-gen game that sold more than 1 million units in 2009 was Final Fantasy XIII.

Now this is just plain wrong, not only are we in the 'current gen', not the 'next gen', but more 'current gen' games sold more than 1m in Japan in 2009 than just FFXIII.  What about Monster Hunter 3, Dragon Quest IX, etc?

Seriously WTF is up with some people's use of tenses when it comes to generations

It's a way to discount all the Wii million sellers.

that just brings the entire article into disrepute though

Western developers focus on 360 and PS3, which happen to be the two platforms with the least sales in Japan, by a large margin.  By limiting yourself to those two platforms, the outcome wasn't surprising at all.

It's almost as absurd as saying '6th gen platforms didnt' fare too well here in Europe, and by 6th gen I'm only counting the Dreamcast and Gamecube'.

this artilce seems pretty spot on i didnt hear anything negative either.

I have lived in Japan for five years going back to right before the 360 launched. I remember very well its luke warm reception. I got one used shortly after its launch for only two-thirds the price. It was good for me, but I couldnt figure out what the problem was. MS later gave them their role playing games with Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. Then there was The Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean 4. Those all released on the 360 first, but still no love.

I used to think that it was that Japanese were untrusting or uninterested in foreign electronics. But then the ipod, iphone and ipad have all caught in here, and they caught on big. MS hasn't done shit to SONY in Japan, but Apple has humbled them along with a bunch of other Japanese companies.

I still cant figure it out. It used to anger me that no one seems to care about 360 in Japan. But i got over it. On the upside, used 360 games are much cheaper than their used PS3 counterparts. But the games out here are still more expensive new or used than what you would pay in the States. And what gets me most is that there are no video game rentals in Japan. It simply defies logic.

I think the primary reason HD consoles have no 'caught on' in Japan is because, well, most HD games are all bark and no bite.

"Why does everyone ask about Chrono Trigger? (responding to a comment about the title being loved) That's not what the sales tell me! If people want a sequel, they should buy more!" - Square Enix Senior Vice President Shinji Hashimoto

im glad japanese people hate fps games. all games are mainstream, times have changed and games change just to sell more. the industry is starting to become worse and wosre, unless your a cod fan.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

I love how the Wii is completely forgotten about when it comes to our CURRENT-gen ("next-gen" as he says) consoles.

This article was so silly.

What's starcraft? ahaha oh man it's likethey're reigon locked from the outside world
