Forums - Sales - The two main reasons why Wii will not outsell PS2

You're ignoring that PS2 saw a redesign while the Wii has yet to see it. If it will ever see.

Redesign make wonders, for instance look at how the 360 or the Ps3 have been selling since they went slimmer.

IMO, a Wii redisign later this year would be ideal. That way we would be back to 2007 numbers, and beating the PS2 in overall sales would be child play.

How can you make the Wii slimmer? Its already much smaller than the PS3 slim and 360 S. I don't think there will be any kind of redesign for the Wii at all.

Plus, the Wii doesn't explode a month after the warranty expires, causing you to buy another one.  I don't know anybody that only owned one PS1 or PS2.

*raises hand*

In fact my PS2 could sue me for abuse.

I actually dropped it on the ground 3 times. The PS logo thing in front of where you put the game actually fell off.

Damn controller wires that kept getting tangled up. I would pull it strongly sometimes and my PS2 payed the price.

But it survived and it still works. Though I dont use it anymore.

PS2 was much bigger than Wii, Wii is barely larger than two DVD cases and is extremely quiet and reliable. It wouldn't benefit from a redesign in the way others do.

but you don't think they have the infrastructure to sell it everywhere, why not?

Because they don't. This is a fact. Sony have a marketing and distribution presence in far more markets than Nintendo does because of their various other hardware products they sell around the world.

Nintendo could establish themselves in other markets, but they have been slow to do so with Korea being the only real move they've done this gen.

100M for sure!

The greatest XBfanboys and PSfanboys wouldn't deny that number!

100M by the end of 2011 is safe, if you ask me.

C'mon

If wii tops 100M before November 2012 then it will be still tracking above PS2, since PS2 topepd 100M after 6 years.

Wii only had 1 big game in 2010(Super Mario Galaxy 2) and it still sells about 140-150K a week. When games come out later this Holiday the Wii will get a major boost like always because the Holidays are always big for the Wii and plus games will come out again. What other Home console besides for the Wii can sell about 150K weekly with almost no support for about 10 Months(N.S.M.B.W came out 10 months ago)(S.M.G.2 and maybe Metroid Other M were the only games that could have helped sell consoles) The following games should have at least a small effect on Wii sales: Wii Party__Kirby's Epic Yarn__Donkey Kong Country Returns__Just Dance 2__Golden Eye 007...Also almost half of the P.S.2 sales were when it was $150 or cheaper and when Wii gets to that price(could be this Holiday) Wii sales should explode.

What do you mean by why?

It's not hypothesis it's fact.

Nintendo completly ignores emerging markets.

In Poland which have potential to sell 500k PS2 consoles (and which still sell to this day and is one of more popular gifts for children) Nintendo doesn't even have a single guy responsible for promoting their machines.

Their idea of "marketing" in 2008 was sending google autotranslated press notes to gaming portals but even that stopped as people were making fun of them (no suprises here for anyone who ever used auto translator knows the end "quality").

Also their price is emerginging markets is far from competitive. Why would average consumer bother with 800-900 pln Wii when he can get well known Playstation 2 for 400 with cheap games and even special Poland oriented versions of Singstar or PS3 for 1100-1400 which comes with all those fully translated PS3 hits (including voice acting done by recognizable actors).

And then thare's also Microsoft offering another alternative with plenty of presence in media and easily pirated console (which is huge thing in such places)

Add to that demographic which is mainly retired pc gamers or pc gamers looking to get another platform and you have receipt for disaster.

well i was thinking more about when it gets cheaper, like the ps2 now,but you're right if they don't have marketing for nintendo products then there is not much point,i guess

i was thinking that someone would import and sell them like every other business, when its cheaper and nintendo have their next console out,but i guess thats up to nintendo

i just think this generation of consoles have alot more life in them,if the companies want them too, especially with the newer markets all over the world,

poland isn't with the euro either yet,i always forget that, pln = zloty,i googled it o-0

1) Software sells systems, if you're not getting software that is compelling to the market, excitement for your console wanes. Now, fortunately Wii has got a big batch of software coming up for the holidays which should give Wii a recovery but looking at the bigger picture, let's face it, nothing is going to change. Wii has already had two major software droughts (latter half of 2008 - most of 2009, and almost all of 2010) and does anyone honestly think that 2011 will be different? So far for 2011 we only know of one significant title for sure, Zelda, and given the last two years we have no reason to think there'll be much beyond that. Third parties aren't suddenly going to change, and Nintendo themselves are now divided over three platforms. With a third year of drought, barely anyone is gonna still be excited about the console.

2) Wii may still be tracking well ahead of PS2, and might thus be expected to be able to outlast it on that basis, except for one slight issue. In the late lifetime of PS2, it wasn't making the bulk of it's sales in the traditional markets like Wii has. This is Sony's biggest advantage in the games console business, they have a strong marketing and distribution presence in regions where Nintendo is not even officially selling consoles. PS2 sold over 20 million in "Other Europe" and "Others" in it's late years which appears to be an impossibility for Wii.

i agree with your all points except marketing.

Also i think theres much more competition this gen. Even though Sony stumbled out of the gate, MSFT picked up the slack. With Move and Kinect coming out i dont think theres as much differentiation, i think the PS2 was sort of the de facto console last gen and it helped long term. For Wii, i think it wont be the de facto console long term based on the competition, imo.
