Yep, my old phat PS3 is still working but worried it will brick and I think that after over 3 yrs it is time for an upgrade. I stopped playing U2 and GOW3 recently coz the console was getting really hot!

I bought the PS3 320GB Move bundle and doing the data transfer now. I hope it will not take too long. About 150GB to transfer.

Anyone has used the data transfer utility before? Does it transfer protected game saves?

I've never done a data transfer but I wish I had. I did the same thing as you and upgraded my fat PS3 to the new slim.

Yes, it should copy over about everything that you have on your old PS3. I used the utility several months ago and as far as I know, everything was transfered.

Is the gnome hiding behind your TV with a pair of scissors? Then you should be alright :P

Maybe not a gnom but I had to make sure my cat doesnt play with the cables. She likes sitting behind tv.

The data trasfer almost complete. Will feedback if the protected game saves got moved to new console.

Copy-protected saves will move (excuse the pun), NOT COPY, onto the new PS3, everything else copies onto it. Hope this helps.

i did the same i have the 60gb with B/C stored it away and bought a 120gb in June i replaced the 120gb with 320gb 7200rpm HDD

the DT transfers the copy righted saves but once you go back to the phats save data all the copy righted saves are gone they only can move from one system to another

so thers no way to store those saves in case something happens to the slim

i deleted most of my non used stuff demos, game installs, ect so my DT took only 23mins

Yeah, using the transfer utility will make sure you have everything that you had on your new console. I used it to transfer between 2 old fats... but I feel I will have to get a slim at some point
