Forums - Sales - Sony: Microsoft Reliant on Shooters

I personally bought my ps3 because I got tired of almost always having to hold a gun to play a good 360 game. Sadly this variaty thing is false. Already I am holding a gun in half the ps3 games I have and I'm even trying to focus on not buying them, but sony's great games are mostly shooters. Lets see I have God of War 3, LittleBigPlanet, Valkaria Chronicals, and Infamous for games that don't rely on shooting. Then I have Uncharted 2, MGS4, rented Killzone 2/Resistance 2. What else is there to get for ps3 exclusives where I'm not holding a gun. GT5, Heavy Rain. Everything else is multiplatform.

I guess its a good thing that uncharted is a platformer which the 360  desperatly needs, and along with God of War 3 is in my top 5 favorite games this gen. Otherwise I would have been pretty dissapointed with my PS3. I think Sony needs to focus more on variaty as well. Not all games need to have a gun involved in them. Is nintendo really the only company that understands that. If only they understood that some of their fans do not want motion control. Then I wouldn't have my current problem this gen.

You need to get:

Demon souls(RPG)

ratchet(platformer)

motorstorm or modnation(depending which type you want more off road racing or cart)

Technically he is right. But Microsoft does deserve credit for the massive sales they generate off of the FPS games. But PlayStation is definitely more diverse when it comes to the library.

Awwww poor Peter Dill...

Head of marketing in SCEA... i.e. Head of the the console that is coming a distant third in his territory.  Seems he is feeling the pressure and isnt very good at his job, so he decides to talk shite.

Poor fella.

Other Dille snippets from 2007 (who how silly he must feel now about the next paragraph)

I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they've never done either. They've never made a dime in this business, number one, and number two, they've never had a tail. They've never been successful enough to have a tail! So the notion of a back half of the curve doesn't exist for them. They stopped the Xbox and I kind of feel for the guy that bought an Xbox the month before they said 'we're out of business, we're moving on.'

With the Xbox 360 you've got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don't, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a 10 year product? And by the way, it doesn't even work. Do they want to be selling it for 10 years and refurbishing them all for 10 more years? I don't think that's a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the PS3 any day.

LOL!!!  MS really have him rattled... I bet he doesnt sleep very well...  poor baby.

Incidentally are FPS games any less worthy than  other genres?

Amazing how you spin something into something it isn't. The PS3 is in third, but it isn't that far behind the 360 and it is the best third place seller of all time. So I fail to see how that is "making him rattled."

Especially since the last 2 generations Sony nailed both Nintendos and Microsofts ass to the wall in a no-contest match.

FPS games are just as good as any other genre. He merely stated that the 360 is more reliant on FPS games and it is, but it doesn't make it bad. Microsoft has done well to generate huge sales off of FPS games.

I figured now would be as good of a time as any to debate the perception of the 360 as a "shooterbox." Peter Dille didn't exactly say that, but it's directly implied with his comments about Microsoft.

Anyway my take is that this is pretty ironic considering that the PS3 has more exclusive shooters and more shooters published by Sony than the 360 has by Microsoft.

Taking a gander at the list:

Sony:
Resistance
Resistance 2
Resistance 3
SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation
SOCOM 4
Killzone 2
Killzone 3
Warhawk
MAG

Microsoft:
Halo 3
Halo 3 ODST
Halo Reach
Gears of War (also on PC)
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Left 4 Dead (also on PC, published by Valve)
Left 4 Dead 2 (also on PC, published by Valve)

So that's 9 to 8 Sony or 9 to 5 Sony if you wanna discount the "console exclusives." What does everyone else think of Dille's comments? Is it coincidental that they were made the release of Halo Reach?

But considering sales, XB360 relies on them more than most other platforms, the top 3 XB360 sellers are shooters, and a total 7 out of the Top 10 are too, while on PS3 the current top seller and the 3rd are shooters, and a total 4 out of the top 10 are too, so they are undeniably important for PS3 too, but not as overwhelmingly as for XB360.

We're livin' in the past!

It is all good and well talking about what you did 15 years ago but it is the now that matters.

I bet if Nintendo had Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto etc etc all EXCLUSIVE in those gens they would of had awesome sales too!

The reality is Sony no longer have those games as exclusives and in some cases they sell better on rival formats i.e GTA4.

And you can't talk like gun games are bad. That is just stupid. Especially when 5 of the top 6 best selling PS3 games are gun games.  What makes it even more strange is if you look at the top 20 games for both consoles 360 has 10 gun games in the top 20 and PS3 has 11 gun games in the top 20.

So to me just sounds like he is under pressure and that is why he made his comments.

I love shooter's,so the more the better,as far as I'm concerned. lol
