Forums - Microsoft - Halo : Combat Evolved is nothing special...

I can't wait till Reach is released so people will just go back to picking on Kinect games.  SIGH.....

Halo: CE is a bajillion years old in gaming years.  I don't really see how anyone would want to compare them to current games or knock them down.  Halo started the entire FPS business on consoles and it was spectacular.  It is the ALPHA and will probably be the Omega when that time comes.  Meaning it started FPS's on consoles, and if FPS's ever "die off" the last great game of that type will probably be a Halo game.

I gave Halo credit for being basically the FPS of its time. But overall the game isn't that good. However the online was fun for its time as well.

Now I know you haven't played it.

there was a service where you could trick the lan into playing online... man  it was laggy but fun... still no match for 4 consoles set up  and 4 tvs with 16 players local

XBC, I know about it because I used it for Halo 2 for many years, but that is still system link, and it isn't hugely known about, infact, I don't think it was around till after H2 was released.

I hate this, and this is coming from someone who really doesn't have anything to say about Microsoft consoles/games.

I honestly respect trolls more than anyone who trash talks an older game. Maybe trash talk is too strong of a word, but if you're going to play a game that's almost ten years old for the first time and judge it as if it was released in the current generation, I really can't take your opinion seriously anymore. Now I've personally never played Halo: Combat Evolved (nor care for it) but I believe people who say it revolutionized the FPS. The fanbase is too huge to ignore and it must be doing something right.

Same goes for people who played Final Fantasy VII recently and took shots at it.

WTF ? I'm not trash talking by any means.

Where have I said ANYTHING negative about the game ? Other than saying that its repetitive.....and the little dudes are annoying. I haven't even finished the game yet, and I just said that it was not what I expected it to be so far. That is all. It probably gets better as it goes on.

Anyway, to the people saying that the PC version sux @ only 83 metacritic vs 97 metacritic for xbawx, its still the same game, isn't it ? PC version was a 2 year late port...so the lower reviews are understandable.

What do you think the reaction would be in the Sony forum if I created a thread called "Gran Turismo is nothing".  The people that wouldn't be calling me a troll would be saying that I was being unfair to the game.

I'm sure if I played the original Gran Turismo now I wouldn't be as impressed as those that played it when it was first released (especially considering that we have stuff like Forza 3 and Gran Turismo 5 now).  But it would be unfair for me to say the original was nothing special because at the time it was special and groundbreaking.

Also the repetitive nature of some parts of the original Halo was even acknowledged by Bungie and is a valid complaint but that is a very minor flaw when the game did so many other things right.  Part of the problem also is that Halo is more than just a quick single player play through (multiplayer and mastering it on legendary made me really appreciate it and realize just how amazing it was).

To be fair to console FPS titles before it, it didn't start the genre there, it expanded on it and made it more mainstream. Titles like GoldenEye 007 & Perfect Dark really got the ball rolling. It just became the real deal when Halo entered the scene. It's the Final Fantasy VII of the FPS genre. As it did to the JRPG genre, halo did it for consoles, but in both cases, they expanded on what already existed.

I have been around gaming for a long time, (started with Pong) and I Ioved GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, but they didn't have all the pieces in place just yet.  Halo came along and brought nearly everything you could want into a FPS together.  So IMHO it is the "ALPHA".....  I wasn't taking anything away from those other games by the way.

lol... excellent.

Uhh it's in my games collection. Would you like me to upload screenshots?

Also in regards to Killzone 1 vs Halo 1

I would give it this

Story: Killzone

Gameplay: Halo

Multiplayer: Halo

Halo 1 was the better game back then, but oh how the tables turned with the sequel.
