Well for one thing, that article was written in May so it was before the Microsoft unvailed the redesigned 360 which has had a huge effect on 360 sales. Since then the 360 has been outselling the PS3 and Wii in world wide sales. My guess is who every this article's writter was quoting would probably like to reasses things.
At this point I don't see the PS3 overtaking the Xbox 360 before the generation is over and even if SOny stubernly tries to ride the PS3 after the compeition kickstarts the next generation I just don't see the PS3 having the same kind of staying power as the PS2. Besides who's really going to pay attention to Gen 7 when Gen 8 hits?
For a while I thought the PS3 might surpass the 360 after it hit $299. It did a great job closing up some of that gap.
But after 360 S hit the market... clearly the 360's success is no fluke and there is demand.
If the PS3 ever manages to get ahead of the 360, doubt it'll happen in 2 years.

Does anyone believe the PS3 can actually overtake the 360 within 2 years? I personally have my doubts whether the PS3 can overtake the 360 this generation. Gran Turismo 5 is the PS3s last chance. The XBox 360s, Halo:Reach should be enough to offset Gran Turismo 5 sales impact. I believe both PS Move and Kinect will have no real impact on the sales. The Wii has the casual video game market wrapped up this generation. Three years time seems more likely when the PS3 overtakes the 360. MS knows how to get more out of the 360. 360 Slim launch was a brilliant move and the Kinect should extend the 360s life span to 10 years. PS3 may have to wait until 2013 or 2014 when it overtakes the 360 in total console sales. |
yes no problem the last shipment gap was 3.6M
no its not its still hasnt reached a $199 price and there are numerous AAA exclusives left
anyone that wants Reach already bought one sure it will have a HW bump do to LE console same cant be said for GT5, Agent, Last Guardian ect
Move does have some serious hardcore games supporting it so just because you think wii has the lock on casuals only means that a devise that appeals and offers games to the casuals only will suffer more
agreed bout the life span
id say it will take 2nd in 2011 or in the fiscal year of 2011 i also believe that PS3 will be the number one selling console in 2011 its SW lineup is insane and there will be a price cut for that will have the bigger impact than what nintendo or MS do with there prices next year

In the end, does it really matter whether or not the PS3 surpasses the 360 in overall console sales? If you look at recent software sales, there is an incredibly smaller gap between the PS3 and 360 version of games.
Take Mafia II for example. The 360 version of Mafia II sold 114,377 this week, while the PS3 version sold 113,252. That's barely over a 1,000 units difference.
Clearly the 360's 5 million plus lead should be generating a considerable amount more software sales than the PS3, but recent trends seem to suggest that the PS3 has dramatically decreased the gap in terms of software sales (which may suggest that the user bases are closer in size than the sales suggest).

No just the last post will do fella but thanks anyway.
As some of them threads might highlight to you btw, something happening historically doesn't always follow the same trends in the present.

Or one of those consoles has a piracy issue and the other doesn't yet...

Yes piracy is an issue, but it's impact on the 360 has been consistent (i.e., it's plagued the 360 early on). Yet, despite the piracy problems, the 360 has generally generated far more software sales than the PS3 in previous years. That difference has recently decreased dramatically.
