Those were either possible or unnessacery before any hacks. When Geohot altered otherOS, SONY removed most emulation and homebrew options with OtherOS. JailBreak at the moment offers nothing but game back ups which was 100 percent [damn symbol doesn't work just like the plus symbol] useless to anyone that doesn't want to pirate games. We were able to back all of our software on any USB device and disc were not only reliable but scratch resistant and beyond easy to take care of. |
I was speaking generally on what hacking a console allows, not specifically related to PS3 jailbreak. It'll go further I'd imagine too, even if some of those things aren't possible now, they will be in time. And no, backups are useful to more than just pirates. I back up all my DS games and saves, and I only play stuff I buy and backup myself. It protects my physical copies, it saves space, it greatly enhances portability, etc.
Also, I wasn't aware Other OS allowed emulators to be run on PS3? Weird, I'd think it'd have gotten more widespread use then? :/

No one's saying it's not. What we're telling that there are different kinds of crimes. You don't get arrested for murder when you steal something, do you? Well maybe you do but in that case, it was obviously a set-up.

still against the law. Pirating is not making a copy, it is stealling a copy. Big difference

What? Do you, by any chance, happen to be a troll? Or are you actually refering to "real" piracy, like pirates at sea?

Let me explain it this way. Say you buy something with your credit card, and the clerk copies your card info, then gives you back your card. He then goes home and uses your card # to buy all kinds of shit. Did he just pirate your identity or is this ID theft. What ever you what to call it, it is the same. You are taking something that does not belong to you, in this case data, and with out the permission of the owner. That is theft.
I suppose Grand Larceny is not theft. When you get caught they don't charge you with theft, they charge you with Grand Larceny. It is just a type of theft, just like piracy.
Your troll comment was uncalled for and pointless. It may have been a bad attempt at humor, I don't know

No. If you steal money from someone you are removing money from their account, not copying it. Theft and copyright infringement are 2 seperate things, which is why there are seperate laws governing them. You can say that piracy is theft all you want, but that doesn't make it true.

There are many seperate laws governing theft, because theft is a broad term. I never said they were legally the exact same. Besides, I don't care what government laws call it. I can read a definition then decide for myself whether something applies to that or not. IMO by definition, piracy is theft. Do I care what I would get charged with if I pirated a game, no because I'm an honest hard working person who doesn't mind supporting the companies who make the games, therfore I don't have to worry about it. You can justify it as piracy all you want, to me, it is still just a thief.

Where did I try to justify piracy? I just pointed out that piracy is not theft and the definition of theft is not something you can change to suit your needs. Theft is not a term like hardcore gamer where the definition can vary from person to person. Theft is a defined term and if you define it differently, you're wrong. Kind of like most people misuse the word irony. They think it means one thing but they are wrong. And again, I'm not defending piracy in any way, I'm just pointing out that your definition of the theft is wrong.
Theft-
| 1. | criminal law the dishonest taking of property belonging to another person with the intention of depriving the owner permanently of its possession |
| 2. |
rare something stolen |
