If I could mod a PS3 to play PS2 and PS games, I would buy a PS3 immediately. And never go online.

Pirates are thieves, plain and simple. It does affect sales and more importantly it drives up costs.  Would ever single pirated game translate to a sale if there were no pirating... NO, but some most definately would. 

There is no reason to hack a PS3 except to steal games.  If you want homebrew, use your PC.  It is far better for that sort of thing.  If you want to hack a PS3 to play PS2 games, uhm, buy a PS2, they are cheap.

Fantranslations, emulation, game mods, backups, homebrew... there's lots of good (and legal) uses for hacking one's console.  All it does is allow one to get more out of their device.

Your the one that's misinformed.  If piracy was theft, when you get caught, you'd be arrested for robbery.  Instead, your sued for copyright infringement.  Big difference.

Those were either possible or unnessacery before any hacks. When Geohot altered otherOS, SONY removed most emulation and homebrew options with OtherOS. JailBreak at the moment offers nothing but game back ups which was 100 percent [damn symbol doesn't work just like the plus symbol] useless to anyone that doesn't want to pirate games. We were able to back all of our software on any USB device and disc were not only reliable but scratch resistant and beyond easy to take care of.

Honestly, we had more features prior to all of this hacking biz at this point.
