Forums - Sony - PS3 Firmware 3.42 Now Live

You're ignoring the possibility that this new firmware might actually stop the exploit in it's tracks. If it indeed does, there's no real update pirates can do. People will be forced to update or buy a second PS3 only to have their first not only cut off from PSN but limited to games that are on the market now. They'll just have to look for a new exploit and it took 3 years just to find this one. Everyone seems to think it's just blocking jailbreak but no one's considering the actual exploit being fixed.

Look how far the update went in a couple weeks compared to how it went for a couple years. They aren't going to let this go.

Look at the WIi and PSP. They release updates that you have to have in order to play games. Pirates can't play new games for a couple weeks, a new patch is released, then they can play to their hearts content. I don't see this being any different.

Anyways, this is already known to be detectable on PSN. So the people that have used the hack couldn't log on to update anyways

zaMy it's an invite-only torrent site. In the past they had a PS3 game section but removed it because it served no purpose as the games couldn't be played. They recently re-added the ps3 game section (along with new torrents) after the jailbreak news broke. The site features a massive amount of movies, tv shows, games, and apps.

It's going to take a while to get games to get the new firmware update. Just enough time for the pirates to update

Ready to bet that all games coming after the end of september will require this new firmware :)

Yes

2.... how much do those dongles cost to produce along with the software on them? Have fun paying an extra $20 per game :D.

Ready to bet that it's less than 1-2 $ with mass production

No.

3. This is the exact same as one :P.

Same bet

Sure

4. Sorry, but this idea is just stupid.... Not everyone has access to broadband. SOny would be crippling their fanbase.

Could be done for gamers wanting to perform online multiplayer with their game.

People who want to use the hack already don't have access to PSN...

5. Same thing with one. Even though they can release firmware every week doesn't mean games are going to put that firmware to use that quickly... Only Sony would probably, and they don't release a game every week

No but this could make hackers work harder and quickly invalidate each one of their attempts

How? For one it's just going to annoy people who want to play, it's going to cost SOny millions in development, and testing, and annoy the crap out of third party's that have to test it out on their games. All the updates aren't going to make it out on discs leaving the pirates with only a handful of ones they need to worry about.

Most of the stuff you listed isn't going to affect pirates, it's just going to be annoying for people that want to play their consoles legally

I doubt it stops the hack people.

Actually, it does.

"Update: We can confirm that all variants of the USB-hub emulating exploit (PSFreedom, PSGroove, PSJailbreak) are no longer functional in firmware 3.42."

http://exophase.com/

unless you hack and don't update for now.

A lot of people may choose to use PS3 offline and have another one for must play online games. Also whats so hard about not updating to 3.42 for a few weeks and waiting for a new hack firmware? Just saying...

By the time Sony gets this firmware on new game disks which trully makes it a manditory update, hack will most likely be updated to go around the Sony firmware block.

Not really... Newer games have always come with the latest firmware or the one just prior depending one when the game goes into print. It's been that way since Firmware 1.02. Most just didn't know about this until the recent Other OS hack thing.

Means absolutely nothing if you do not update. For example my PSP custom firmware is still at 5.00 but I have no issues playing games that require anything beyond 5.00.

Birth By Sleep for example requires something along the lines of 6.XX and playing it is no problem. All it requires is access to the flash memory and modifying files to trick the console into thinking it's firmware version is higher than it actually is.

If they get a custom firmware to install for those who do no update then the scene wins, no questions asked. Forced firmware updates on games will be absolutely moot.

You obviously do not know the scene very well.

I highly doubt SONY beat the scene because of this update. To be honest I know they didn't beat the scene.

By the way people, the PSJailbreak team is releasing a 3.42 updated version next week.

"After talking with the manufacturer i can confirm that next week we will already have available an update for the PS Jailbreak to add compatibility with this new version of firmware v3.42, and also have available a new version of Backup Manager with important new features (at the moment can not indicate one.) But more importantly, according to the manufacturer, these two actualizazciones not be compatible with any of the clones"

Like I said, the cat and mouse game begins. You guys are silly to think SONY could stop something like this so easily.

By the way, PSGroove is getting an update real soon as well.

So lesson learned here is that when you see an article about a manufacturer stopping a hack, don't take it as the be all end all, because 10 times out of 10 it usually isn't.

You know how many times they made it seem like MS stopped the DVD drive firmware hacks? Usually once a hack is found it grows and grows and the scene jumps on it like rabid wolves and it doesn't stop.

Like when kXploit was figured out for PSP 1.50 early on in it's life. SONY then went and stopped it. A few days later an improved exploit was created from it and from there we arrived at where the PSP is now.

PS3 is hacked, get used to it and stop worrying about it as if we here are affected in any way. How many of us own stocks and how many of us were affected due to the super high piracy capabilities of the PS2?

SONY is still going to make games. They don't have a choice.
