Um... the galaxy tab is rumored to be 699 euro's.... that's 900 dollars..

Weird, my mom was under the impression it was going to be around 200, upwards of 300 dollars in the USA. Are you guessing the price merely based on the euro value? On one hand, it makes sense, but it's not always the best thing to go by. I guess we'll see when they reveal more info.

So it's best to just wait until next year to buy, then? Oh well.. I was thinking of getting one for her as a Christmas present, I suppose it can wait.

Read an article on Yahoo today and it mentioned that the Galaxy will go for $200-$300.

If true, definitely go with the Galaxy.

Hahahhaha. My mom reads Yahoo all the time. This must have been how she found out about the product today, and also got her 200-300 estimate. Well, now I know.

And thanks. ^_^

I am 95% certain that $200 figure is with a contract btw, according to engadget a Samsung exec said that it will go for slightly for expensive than the Galaxy smartphone which is $200 with contract

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/05/samsung-suggests-galaxy-tab-will-cost-between-200-and-400-a/

Early reports indicate Europe will pay a pretty penny for Samsung's Galaxy Tab, but the 7-inch tablet may cost a good bit less when it comes to US shores -- the Wall Street Journal paraphrases a Samsung executive who claims it could run between $200 and $300 depending on the all-important carrier subsidies. The Korea Times, meanwhile, suggests a $300 to $400 retail price according to a different Samsung bigwig, who added that the Tab "will cost slightly more than the Galaxy S smartphone." As you're probably aware, Sammy's Galaxy S typically retails for about $200 in the US -- excepting Sprint's Epic 4G at $250 -- so if you held a bursting Li-ion battery to our head and forced us to guess, we'd say the latter range of dollar signs is far more likely.

By the way, Vodafone UK shows the Galaxy Tab as "coming soon." Hit our more coverage link for details.

so the 200-300 dollars is with a data contract...

The Galaxy Tab is $799 without contract (edit: $599).

Why not try the iPad in some Apple Store and compare.

Alright, and what exactly is the contract? A phone-service plan? Sorry I'm extremely unknowledgeable with this field of tech. x_x

I would suggest the iPad for the already developed ecosystem, larger screen and from the looks of it the lower price for a device without a contract.

Tease.

Kinda... but for internet only.. so no calls.. just a 3g data plan.. so you will have internet everywhere you go with your pad/tab..

AT & T has one for the ipad.. http://www.apple.com/ipad/3g/

Data per month Price per month
250MB $14.99
2GB $25

which is riducilous expensive... but I think most carriers will be around the same price.. note these are not the same as normal laptop internet contracts or internet for your phone contracts... these are "special" (just a way to make more money)

so for a 200 dollar galaxy tab your probably looking at a 2 year contract for 25 dollars each month..

Probably not a phone but a data subscription plan, which typically adds about $40 a month (unlimited plan) to a cell phone bill.

All service carriers vary, so there's no single answer. Some offer unlimited data plans, others charge by the GB. You pay a heavy premium for exceeding your preset limit. You'd have to get the rates from the carrier who sells you the tablet that's tethered to their data network.

Subsidized items like cell phones usually require a 2 year contract to get the reduced price.

It goes without saying that the data plan costs a lot more than the device itself, so the carrier/service provider is just as important when choosing which to buy.

That sounds like a pile of BS.

Without the contract, is it possible to go online with either the iPad or the Galaxy Tab on a normal household wireless connection? Or is the only way they receive an internet connection through their specific contracted service?

You should get her an iPad, I heard it was the lastest cool new thing for women.
