Forums - Nintendo - Would you like it if Retro Studios made a Zelda game?

I'd have to look at it with caution. Retro has done some great things, and some... not so great things. I'm not completely averse to the idea, but... I can't say I'd be excited merely at its announcement, either.

I think that Zelda would benefit from an infusion of old ideas. What I miss in today's games in general is that they rely too much on adding gimmicks to pretend creativity instead of finetuning the core gameplay. I can find games that contain useless features everywhere, but hardly any that are pure, for a lack of a better word. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a good example of a game I want to play, because there's literally nothing that interferes the joy of 2D platforming.

I hope that didn't break any of your guidelines...

Granted, but it's easy to say "Mario is about running and jumping", but it is hard to say what Zelda is about and getting any level of agreement about it.

One of the things we'd have to expect is that there would be no satisfying everyone with a Retro Zelda game, so the question is more: do you think they could make a good Zelda in the form that you prefer?

I would play that bad boy in a heart beat!

Although, for Retro to make a Zelda game, it means they need to add some sort of twist to it. Making them do something in-house Nintendo can do even better, then that seems pointless.

I bet they could still do a respectable Zelda game, though.

Retro Studios is a proven development team.

So I would definitely like to see their take on Zelda. It might even turnout to be something like Shadow of the Colossus or Okami. Which IMO would be interesting and besides it wouldn't be the first time a Zelda game was outsourced. The Minish Cap was a great game after all and weren't the developers at Retro made to play the Donkey Kong Country series? So I'm sure they could do the series justice. Nintendo would likely oversee the development so it would still be true to the series.

May I ask for one example?

OT: Yes, it'd be interesting to see what they could cook up.

hasn't retro only done the metroid prime series until DKCR.

I took this from wikipedia

2002 Metroid Prime Nintendo First-person adventure
2004 Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Nintendo First-person adventure

[edit] Wii

Release date Title Publisher Genre
2007 Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Nintendo First-person adventure
2009 Metroid Prime: Trilogy Nintendo First-person adventure
2010 Donkey Kong Country Returns Nintendo side-scrolling 2.5D platform game

Though, Jeff Spangenberg the founder has been apart of a lot of studios. But, the only negative thing I could find, was cancelled projects associated with them, and if someone personally didn't like metroid prime series (like I don't particularly like it as stated). But I couldn't find anything that was jarringly consensusly negative that they've done.

I wouldn't be against them giving them a shot, one of my favorite Zelda games was made by Capcom, so it's not like other folks can't make them.

They would do a great job, I'm sure, but Zelda is in good hands. After Donkey Kong, Retro need to get to work on Eternal Darkness 2... :)

I strongly concur with this post.
