Molyneux: Xbox 360 'Nowhere Near' Limits

Microsoft Game Studios Creative Director Peter Molyneux thinks there's plenty of life left in the Xbox 360, five years after the console's launch

Molyneux is guest editor of 360 Magazine issue 72 - asked what might emerge on the 360 over next five years, the veteran designer told the magazine: "I think the next five years will be pretty interesting. The release of Kinect this holiday is going to change the type of people that play on the 360, and is going to change the sort of genres that are going to be played on the 360."

Critics cited a lack of core-focused titles for Kinect when the peripheral was detailed at E3, but Molyneux thinks there's something for everyone in the 360's future.

“It just doesn't feel like we've reached the limits of the 360 or anywhere near it”

"You're just going to see some amazing core games, so the future of the 360, I think, is very bright, and continues to evolve as any platorm does. It just doesn't feel like we've reached the limits of the 360 or anywhere near it."

We know of at least one developer who would disagree.

Molyneux is the developer who works at Lionhead Studios. So yes he is the Fable developer.

Maybe he's wriggling his thought process meaning using Kinect, not pushing more power.

Molyneux before he became Microsoft Game Studios Creative Director was known for hyperbole in hyping up features about his upcoming games that never came to fruition. Now that Molyneux is in a position of authority where he has to always paint a rosy picture, Molyneux is just piling the bullshit even higher.

Don't believe a word. He is speaking to investors and potential shareholders of Microsoft stock. Of course he is going to hype it up to the nth degree.

I trust Crytek because since Far Cry and on to Crysis, their games have been at the cutting edge of graphics capability. Crytek knows exactly what the limits are and how much they will have to downgrade Crysis 2 to get it running at a 40-60 FPS for the 360 and PS3 version.

BTW, don't blame Crytek for the subpar Far Cry 2. The makers of the Assassin's Creed series, Ubisoft Montreal, developed Far Cry 2, while Crytek has done Far Cry, Crysis, Crysis: Warhead, and Crysis 2.

Crytek is up there at the top in terms of development studios who take the due diligence and devotion to routinely put out gems of games.

I laughed when I read the topic...Molyneux Hype-Engine at work again, the guy allways has big dreams and gets hyped from the slightest things. :P

I do like lionhead-games though, even though they never really meet the hype.

Far Cry, Crysis, Crysis: Warhead, and Crysis 2... gems of games?

In what world?

They're really great graphics achievement, but as far as most other aspects go... not so much.

Other than this, your comment about Molyneux was spot on.

There are features of the 360 that no developer has really tapped into and used not to mention there are way to optimize and a multi console/pc engine can never truly max out a system because it will never truely use the strengths of each system for PR purposes.

I don't think it is really fair to contrast the Molyneux and Crytec statements, the Crytec statements are about graphics power/ability while Molyneux seems to be more talking about 'general limits' which is mushy enough to be interpreted anyway one likes. I am sure he would define the new limits as having access to Kinect for instance.

So while I do generally think Molyneux is a bit of a windbag, well this is another one of his empty claims, but it is not necesarilly correct to contrast it to the Crytek claim, as he is not being concrete enough for us to say he is talking about graphical improvements.
