The problem with the whole other OS thing is that certain games force you to update your firmware. It has nothing to do with PSN. You lose the ability to play games after a while if you want to keep Other OS.

I'm glad someone in here is using their brain. It's "optional" alright. You have the option of not having access to PSN and new games or keeping Other OS. In the otherwords, it's not really optional.

please explain how it isn't optional.  are you saying anyone who doesn't have the PS3 connected online can't play certain games?  where are all the lawsuits for that then if that was the case?

clearly there is a way to play games without being online since the PS3 doesn't state mandatory online connection. and if that is the case, losing other OS again doesn't prohibit the playing of games.

Dont forget that some were talking about this particular case. The plaintiff didnt brought any issue about not being able to play games he wanted to play. He actually already did the update in order to keep PSN. Could have a been a different decision if the plaintiff had requested compensation for something included with his PS3 purchase, like playing regular PS3 games.

Some games have to have a specific firmware. Those games come with it on the discs. If you try to play RDR it will tell you to update before you can play.

So the update is not optional. You have to have it to continue using the basic features of the gaming system you bought

Sig thanks to Saber! :D

This is extremely extremely disappointing, however I want to see how the EU one will proceed if it ever ended up getting together.

Lets hope they bring the right arguments. But, they shouldnt try to profit from the situation either. They should ask for something reasonable and consequent to their problem, like getting a free slim PS3 for everyone in the class action. Why would you ask for big sum of money when you simply need another PS3. Its not like Sony were making you loose your career or reputation.

If "other OS" would be a problem for me, I would send Sony Canada a formal notice with proof of purchase of the original PS3 to provide me with a PS3 slim or else I would take legal action to get one. I would never ask for damage and interest of 500$ plus, thats not consequent and its trying to profit from a bad situation (Sony getting hacked).

Anyway, I hope they win since this create a bad precedant. But, I think they will loose because of what they are asking. Seems to me that most wants to get money for something that doesnt cause them prejudice to begin with.

Its an evidence, they didnt remove "other OS", they removed PSN. Not that I particularly approve doing so, but still, its in their rights. Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

It's their right to take away an advertised feature?

Legally speaking, when your purchasing a PS3 you arent purchasing PSN. Its a free service they advertise as being a free service, its not hardware. Not only they advertise it as being a free service, but it also requires a separate agreement where they precise they may stop supporting it. The guy was asking money out of loosing something that was offered to him freely. No wonder Sony won.

This, exactly.

Running Linux on PS3 is the worst experience ever, PS3 is super powerful for a game console, but super lame as a PC. Where to find a PC nowadays with only 256mb of onboard memories, without graphic card support (Sony block linux from accessing RSX)?

A real PC guy who is interested in Linux, and knowing there are computer systems that doesn't come with the floating squares or the partly eatern fruit, should be able to run Linux on any PC, even old one with ease. There is Ubuntu that install very easyly through GUI guidance, and if u're afraid to install into ur harddisk, can always runs Slax on ur thumbdrive.

TV screen, even the HD one are no match for monitor to display test, I always strain my eyes to read the test by using PS3 in-built browser. So why bother? Game machine is meant for games, want to type some word files? Get a PC.
