Funnily enough, THQ's been haemorrhaging money for years.

What does this have to do with THQ?
Try reading the last 50 or so posts in the thread.

I actually had no idea for THQ but let me demonstarte why your logic is retarded. Look at the figures you linked for EA. Look at the PC then look at the Wii then back at the PC. Notice something. By your logic, the Wii is the console that is the most worthless and no one should bother with it. Now if you are trying to tell me that the Wii is less profitable than the PC, the PS3, or the 360, then you are just a damned fool and an idiot, or you are wrong and just hate to admit it. |
That is becuase EA has problems to sell their sports titles on the Wii AND some of their "bigger" games can't be done on the Wii. Like a "real" Dead Space, Battlefield, Dragon Age or whatever. That is why the revenue is lower on the Wii.
I know I can do whatever I want, you guys won't change your mind, but if the PC is so profitable, why aren't developers not focusing on it? Don't they know how to run a business? I think they know it better than anyone on VGC. Why do they support consoles more than PC, when the PC is the place to get the money from?
Why don't we ask another developer like Epic? The answer is: The money is on consoles!

But I know this will not prove you wrong. Let me know why Epic does not count either. Thanks.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Wow, I mean, you are REALLY thick. Substitue PC for Wii and a few other words and you have the exact same reason for the PC revenue. I guess that logic only makes sense to you when it's convenient for you.
Anywho, I call your Epic, and raise you BioWare:
"Every two or three years we hear the announcement of fantasy being dead, PC gaming being dead and RPGs being dead. And yet, all of the biggest games that ever come out – that set the records – are nearly always PC games, and a lot of them are fantasy games. The biggest game in the world is a fantasy, PC, RPG MMO."
I also raise you Blizzard and Valve. You can look up their earning reports yourself. Now you tell me who makes more money, Blizzard and Valve, or Epic?

So you mean besides
???
Blizzard is a PC only developer. This is like saying Nintendo makes most of the money from consoles / handhelds and not PC games. Same for Sony.
Valve is steam. So yeah.
What about
All of them make most of their money on consoles and not the PC. Why don't they count?
Again if the PC market was so highly profitable like you say, developers and publishers would push it big time. They are not and that tells us a lot.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
So we don't include Blizzard or Valve, yet you throw in Konami, Namco, Bungie, From Software and Level 5 who as far as I can make out have barely released a PC game between them in years. For every list of console-oriented companies you make, there's an equivalent list of PC-oriented ones like Paradox, Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive, 1C, Stardock and Relic who make most if not all their money on the PC. Many of the companies you've listed might make big sales and have big revenues but they barely clear a profit. In fact many of them have been making hefty losses. Also, as for pushing it 'big time', both Square Enix and Capcom have recently produced some stellar ports for the PC. I'd imagine their reasoning is that they're developing games on a PC anyway, so why not release a PC version- it's practically free money.
The point everyone's trying to get across and that you're spectacularly failing to comprehend is that this blockbuster games strategy just isn't proving profitable for many developers and publishers. The HD console market is saturated with games that need to sell in huge quantities just to break even on their massive budgets. In contrast the PC market is far more diversified, and plenty of money is being made by more savvy and agile companies without having to risk tens of millions.

Epic is Unreal Engine, so yeah...
As for the publishers you've given, how many are actually making a decent sum of money? You keep giving revenue figures, but in terms of profit very few publishers are actually making a decent sum of money.
And as for PC support decreasing, it's not. Your idea of PC support waning is based on most games going multiplatform, yet this works in both directions. Did Capcom need to release Resident Evil 5 on PC? Sales-wise we could say it did awful (it was afterall a cheap port), yet Capcom put it on PC anyway knowing that each PC sale would generate more profit per unit.
And the Blizzard/Nintendo comparison is actually sound as they're the only companies generating mass profit (except maybe PC based Valve, Epic and probably Bungie, but we know why that is). Blizzard on PC; this low revenue and supposedly dying platform and Nintendo on Wii/DS; where costs are much lower, hence profit much higher.
Everyone else, that is these companies concentrating on the HD consoles, is either losing money or, not making very much. Look up the financial repots of the companies you've listed; huge revenue, low profit. Capcom described their own finances as sluggish, Konami made money thanks to Peace Walker on PSP (high profit margins) etc.

Over 70% of developers are working on PC games, while only 41% are making for consoles: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/20092010-state-of-game-development-survey-reveals-marked-increase-in-iphone-developers-decrease-in-wii-development-83630472.html
"Just over 70 percent of developers said they were developing at least one game for PC or Mac (including browser and social games), rising slightly from last year, with 41 percent working in consoles."
Note the part where it says that the percentage of PC developers increased! There's almost twice as many PC developers compared to Console developers.
"Within that latter group, Xbox 360 was the most popular system with 69 percent of console developers targeting it, followed by 61 percent for PlayStation 3.
While those figures stayed within a few percent of last year's results, the change in Wii adoption was much more significant: reported developer support for the system dropped from 42 percent to 30 percent of console developers, suggesting a recent softening of the Wii market."
So, the amount of developers can be put like this (with overlap for multiplat console games):
70% PC
28% Xbox 360
25% PS3
12% Wii
PC, fuck yeah!
PC gaming owns in asia..but too bad most of the game copies there are pirated even in some game stores and lan gaming shops and the most popular games there are F2P mmos.(except for south korea maybe?)
A lot of people over there just have the mentality of "why pay for it when i can get for free?" and luckily the problems in asia haven't spilled over to europe and the west.
All sorts of different gaming genre is considered dead bcos of the piracy except for F2P mmos and good for the west I say for having such a lively PC scene.
