It is difficult to resist personal internet usage at work but you could be in trouble if you are monitored.

I do check news/forums but as my firm monitors our internet usage it’s a risky business to surf  if the websites have nothing to do with work. My friend's firm went even further. When they  r browsing websites other than HMRC, google etc a message pops out and they have to confirm that this is work related search etc.

Another think is a desktop surveillance but I don’t think they are doing this.

So do you use wrk computer or is your mobile your only escape?

I use my work computer, we have no screening... though my boss  has a view on my screen from where he sits, so I limit it to breaks and work the rest of the time.... :x

oh hell..that really sucks.. as I do have a cubicle covering me from all my peers and ofcourse my boss in the other room...there are plans though to bring on the screening.

Same here and i'd constantly go on VGC.  It's the only way to keep my sanity and surviving working there, the work itself is fine, its just the environment and people there.

Technically I don't work, I'm a research student. But it's not too dissimilar to a full time job, I work in an office with my own desk and computer, colleagues surround me, etc. Usually I'm quite good at not checking VGChartz, I might do it at lunch and that's it.

But today I'm not feeling so dedicated, I've checked VGChartz several times when I should be working. Maybe it's because I'm one of two people in the office today so I'm surfing the internet to fill the conversational gaps (everyone's gone on their summer holidays while not much is going on). Maybe it's also because it's premier league transfer deadline day and I've had a browser occupying half a monitor all day so I can keep up with the latest news, which makes me think about surfing the internet more often. My work's still getting done though, so it's not too bad.

As for being monitored, our web history is logged but we don't get punished for surfing non-work related websites (in fact, I doubt anyone even checks it).

If I had a job I definately would.

I am working for a big company. I think it is allowed to use the internet of my company privately as long as you don't do it during work time. So I have no problem surfing. However, the companies proxy is configured to block adult-themed pages. (I see this as a challenge )

There are computers all over the place at my job but anything game related is firewalled.  I can't even read some articles on yahoo.  Once, there was a story on the front page of yahoo that said "The secret of the rubik's cube is unlocked".  I couldn't even look at that!  Same thing, when Prince of Persia became the highest earning video game movie of all time or when the high scores in were set by Billy Mitchell in DK and DK Jr (but I bet he didn't get 101% in DKC like I did--IN YOUR FACE, "KING OF KONG!")

But I use my cell phone so it's all good.  I just don't like posting from it.  I do get to read full threads a lot more often, though.
