Well with Toshiba and Sony both working on glasses free 3D TV sets they are probably rather glad that Samsung has most of the glasses required market. Might be just about the shortest entertainment technology cycle ever if the glasses free tech comes around soon.

You did not just spin that into Sony's advantage.

Yes he did...

To be honest, it really wasn't a fair fight from the beginning. Samsung had 3D plasmas ready in 2008 (see 2008 models http://www.3dmovielist.com/3dhdtvs.html

All they did is slapped on an HDMI 1.4 standard and made the phosphorus faster to prevent ghosting and shipped the TVs.

Sony and Panasonic can not compete with Samsungs price to performance ratio. Panasonic sets are ~1000 dollars more for similar screens, but they do have a better 2D and 3D picture.

Sony on the other hand has had the exact same issues with their 3D LEDs as Samsung (ghosting, image out of sync when head is tilted, high price) but they are asking 1000 to 2000 dollars more for their units which is just rediculous. Since Sony doesn't make plasmas (which are better for 3D and cheaper to manufacture) they are hadicapped in the 3D race from the start.

well samsung released half a year earlier than its competition.. so its like saying XBOX 360 has 90% of the gaming market in DEC 2006 over the WII and PS3

Weren't really mainstream in the Best Buy add until this Spring though. That's when the 3D rush began for all companies

lol I bought mine in Best buy in 2008.

They sold 700,000 3D capable sets in 2008 in the US. I would say that is pretty substantial -

In any case, I understand what you are saying...if media doesn't talk about it, it doesn't exist.

That's a nice boast for Samsung but the 3DTV race won't begin in earnest until it's possible sans glasses.

Currently this could be akin to owning 88% of the HDDVD market before Bluray raped them.

Samsung's TV quality is equal or better to Sony's and cheaper. Its obvious its going to sell more. Sony charges more because of the name. Personally my next tv will be a Samsung. Most likely an LED.

Not to surprised, seems to me Sony so far is only marketing the concept, not the actual tv's. I have been interested in getting a Sony 3D tv, but even on their website I am having trouble finding which tv's are 3D capable or not. And finding a Sony 3D capable tv easily on any online retailer also seems difficult.

That said, could people please stop with the glasses less TV predictions. So far there are truly no WORKING solution even known for big tv's. The glasses less solutions known are either not working well for big tvs (ie. you can't take the 3DS setup and scale it up for TV use) or so complicated and expensive that they are impossible to produce at a consumer grade price (so if you think current 3D tv's are expensive...).

Of course your right, but the need for glasses will always severely limit 3D, and everyone knows it and all tech companies are looking for a cost effective glassesless solution.  Ultimately, someone will find one, and then 3D TV will become the norm.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I just bought a new monitor... a Samsung. I chose a new TV for my girlfriend... a Samsung. In the next six months, I'll be looking at a new television purchase... probably a Samsung. They're kicking everyone's ass in the price vs. specs category. No way would I even consider a Sony at this point... they're at least $500 more for similar tech.

PS. I'm still convinced that 3D is a fad. Unless the tech becomes seamless, works with everything, and doesn't require glasses, the masses are not going to buy into it. I know I'm not.
