Later on they shoot them from those bird-things (a bit extra speed), but still... that doesn't make sense. It's just movierules.

also the soldiers seemed massively underpowered like the soldiers didn't have any rocket launchers they could have just used a stealth bomber to take out the tree of souls and the hover planes went down way too easy

They 'explained' the lack of those military tactics with the 'fact' that Pandora's atmosfeer screws up advanced equipement.
The (private) military in the movie looks pretty lame for the future age. They don't even have killersatellites around the planet. Geez, we could even build them today.
