Forums - Gaming - Is it just me or is the 360 low on exclusives in 2011 vs the PS3?

Good post by Reasonable. MS needs more first party studios and acquire some too. Sony bought Naughty Dog back in 2001 and look how that turned out.

It seems like that's the case almost every year (Although 360 usually has 2 or 3 games to list).   I'm sure the 360 will pickup some games as the year goes on so I wouldn't be worried just yet.

....But this is something that I have felt for several years now will really cripple the 360.  They just don't have enough first party studio's. I've felt for this entire generation they are relying primarily on

(Gears sequel/Halo IP game/ Forza sequel / Fable / Third Party Exclusive).

This lack of first party studios becomes even more astounding when you think about the Kinect.  They better pray that Kinect garners a ton of third party support, otherwise they are going to have a hard time pushing a concept that's never really been done before and proving that it works and works well.

What happens when what happened to Sony (Losing almost all third party exclusivity) happens to Microsoft?   I mean we're already seeing Bioshock/Mass Effect/Portal/etc big time games jump ship over to Sony.   I think Sony will clearly out produce MS in this regard because they have the ability to pump out several IPs per year with their sheer amount of First Party.

I guess to sum it up,  MS is notorious a 'last minute' surprise type of company (Especially this early in the year)  where as Sony announces their games  5 years before they hit the market (See GT5 :P)....So there is some time for MS to announce a beefier lineup, but overall I think we will start to see this more and more and tilt in favor of the PS3.  (Especially if we've seen the last Halo / Gears ) this generation.

i see the same thing from Nintendo and it upsets me to no end, but the dif is Nintendo has the IP's.

i think everything you said is right except the Halo and Gears coments? i'm not convenced we've seen the last of these two games with 5 yr's left in this gen. the new studio behind handling everything Halo will haft to prove they can do a good Halo game so i think theres room for 1 more Halo game.

as for Gears?, Cliff bleszinski has already stated that theres more that can be done in a 3rd person cover based shooter so there maybe room for another if not a new TPS for all platforms. (i know Gears was planed as a trilogy)

I know this is off topic, but given S.T.A.G.E. has often been fairly pro 360 and clearly likes the console why is he getting so much bashing for simply stating he's a little concerned about the currently known exclusives it'll receive in 2011?

His point is fair and at this time the known titles that are 100% 360 exclusive are very thin on the ground and there aren't even that many notable 360/PC exclusives at this point.

With Valve now commiting themselves to releasing on PS3, and Mass Effect franchise going multi-platform his concerns on exclusive support seem fair enough and he only asked whether others agreed wtih him or not - not to be attacked.

In a few months things might change, lot's of exclusives might be revealed, but right now his concern seems fair to me and I don't know why so many are responding as if he's launching some sort of stealth attack on the 360 because, at least IMHO, he's clearly not.

I'd say right now most new titles being shown or pushed are Kinect focused, we all know MS has less 1st party development capabilty than Nintendo or Sony and a number of former key 360/PC franchises developers are now going fully multiplatform (Valve and Bioware).

If you're not interested in Kinect - which he doesn't seem to be - I think it's fair to wonder whether you're going to get a few exclusives you might be interested in or whether you're going to get more than that.

As I noted I don't think having less exclusives will actually harm the 360 at this point - but that doesn't seem to be his focus, simply that he's worried that while he'll of course get all the big multi-platform titles as well as the key exclusives (Halo, Gears) there's not much else unique he can see on the horizon at this point.

My problem is that the viewpoint is based on fear instead of facts.

1) Kinect will be the focus for MGS going forward.

Why would anyone come to that conclusion???  The lineup revealed at E3 seemed to favor the rest of 360 owners more than Kinect, as Halo Reach, Fable III and Gears of War 3 are all FAR bigger than any Kinect game announced for now or the foreseeable future.

2) Gears of War 3 is the only non-Kinect game that we know is coming in 2011.

So far, yes.  So.  Far.  But, as any 360 owner should know, this isn't anything new for MS.  They generally like to keep game announcements close to the vest and revealed at key moments closer to their release than Sony.  Just because that's all we know doesn't at all mean that is all that they have.  Again, this is NOTHING NEW.

3) The PS3 exclusive lineup looks so much more promising.

First, read number 2 again.  Second, stop comparing.  Really, if between 1st and 3rd party games the 360 lineup keeps you entertained throughout the year, what difference does it make???  Not to get into life lessons, but if you always compare yourself to those that have more than you, you will never find time to appreciate the things you do have.  Sorry, its just unhealthy, especially when there ARE plenty of games to play.  So what if some of them are available on the PS3 too.  There is no one console that has everything, and that includes the 360.

For the record, I'm a happy 360 owner that's not looking forward to Kinect THIS FALL (save Dance Central, but not worth it still) but instead all of the other games 1st and 3rd and XBLA that are coming.  Again, its a focus on what I know I'll be playing between now and next April/May and have strong confidence that there will be plenty to play after that for us non-Kinect owning 360 players.

Because people who like exclusives support wife-beaters. We don't like wife-beaters. Do you support wife-beaters?

Theres a lot of online game exclusive support, still. Also we haven't heard anything from several key Xbox 360 related studios for a while now. We don't know what Rare, 343 Studios, Firebird Studios and Lionhead have in store for 2011. So its a little presumptuous especially when Microsoft has made it clear that they want to announce the games closer to release. Beyond this, they tend to release their exclusives towards the back half of the year. No news != bad news.

Kinect is being released in November. We don't tend to know of games releasing beyond the end of the calendar year with few exceptions for games being released early like for instance Gears of War 3.

The better question is why do 360 owners care?  As long as they have the top 2 (Halo, COD) games in the top genre (shooter), everything else becomes second rate or a waste of time.  Really, who's going to stop playing those to play KZ or anything else from the long list of wannabe Halo/COD killers?  The playercount numbers and sales speak for itself.

Actually the PS3's list isn't primarily shooter based like the 360. It is diverse between death match racing, shooting, action adventure and more..

Thank you for this post Reasonable. This is exactly my point. The difference is I am not pro-360, but yes i'll admit in the past I made a lot of positive 360 comments. The reason for this is because of Microsofts astonishing 180 after the original Xbox where they actually got quality titles on their system, where Sony was lost in the middle. I have a PS3 though and I feel no fear of being entertained in 2011. My concern, yes, is with Microsoft and their offerings for non-kinect consumers. I thank you again...you said it better than I could at the time.

All which most 360 owners don't give a rat's ass about.

Top genre? LOL.  Not even.  True 'Shooter' gamers play PC anyways.

You're right, I messed up.  It's actually Farmville, followed by COD/Halo/Shooters.  Oh yeah, dance games, Wii sports and casual too.  MMOs are somewhere there.

But I guess COD sales/playercount #'s just happen to be a fluke, as are the Halo sales/playercount #'s.  Not to mention WoW subscriptions and Farmville numbers.

I agree shooters are best on PC, but the numbers don't lie - shooters are the highest in demand now, why else would COD be the highest PS3 selling game?  You can keep throwing 100's of exclusives at the wall and hope something sticks, but nobody will care unless you can dethrone the top dogs otherwise you are just mopping up the leftovers.  As far as I can tell, nothing has come even close.  If Sony really wants to get the big numbers, they have to appeal to the 2 big demographics right now, shooters and casual.  Just happens that those are the genres the self proclaimed "hardcore" fans turn their noses up at...if you don't want that market, don't complain when the #'s are coming up short.

So your theory is that you as a gamer are ok with just Casual and Shooter games because those sell the best?  I can't see any reason someone would go against variety like that.

Lastly, do you play sales?  Does many many people buying the same game you bought make it more fun or better?  Should I have enjoyed SotC less than I enjoyed GTA IV because it sold worse?
