Forums - Nintendo - Why doesnt Nintendo put more games on dual layer discs?

Higher storage capacity doesn't equal better graphics. You can cram a 500g disc with a lot of high res textures but your vid card will put out the same amount of pixels as usual and will slow down if the textures are too high quality for the ram and vid card to process. Just pointing this out since a lot of people seem to think that Blu-Ray or more storage equals better graphics, that's 99% not the case at all.

I'd like them to utilise the extra capacity of a dual-layer disc but only if they utilise it well. I read that Skyward Sword will feature a 'denser' but smaller overworld than Twilight Princess, so I'm not sure what that means for the overall size of the game. If they stick in fully orchestrated music and a heavily populated overworld it may very well be dual-layer, but it's not as if I'll be disappointed if they don't require that much capacity. Both Galaxy games fit on a single layer disc, and as far as I am concerned, they are two of the finest gaming experiences ever created, never mind this generation.

Mr.T-Tar pointed out The Last Story as a possible dual-layer game-if that's the case, we could have a truly epic RPG on our hands there. That's the kind of use of the extra capacity I want-if it benefits the game, use it, but don't try and force content into the game just for the sake of filling the disc.

Link? I don't remember reading this anywhere...

I think you guys are really underestimating how much space there really is on 4.7 GBs.

yeah, he's right, in Iwata asks Aonuma said  they had a sense that Twilight Princess was too big and wanted to create a "more compact and solid experience".

Edit:

Funny how Miyamoto convinced Aounma to use motion plus lol

SSBBrawl came on a dual layer disc, MP Trilogy did and so will Other M.  The Last Story almost certainly will (Lost Odyssey came on 4 discs, if I remember correctly).  I'm pretty sure Zelda SS will as well, Zelda TP had a decent amount of FMVs considering it had to fit on a Gamecube mini disk, so I'm sure  Skyward Sword will have more and possibly orchastrated music or voice acting, all which will take up more space.  It could also possibly due to not many Nintendo games having extensive voice acting.

Twilight Princess didn't use any FMV, all the cutscenes were done with the in-game engine.

OT: There's two major reasons why Nintendo doesn't put every game on dual-layer discs.

1.) Disc-reading problems. Back when Brawl was released, some Wii-owners had issues getting it to run properly because of dust (inb4 dated jokes) building up inside the Wii causing disc-reading errors. They did the nice thing by offering free cleanings, but it still sucks when you can't play a game because your system can't read the disc right.

2.) They're not needed. Nintendo doesn't implement anything into their games unless it's necessary. That's why we haven't seen too many games from them that use the Wii MotionPlus or Balance Board. If they can fit a game into a regular DVD, then they don't see any reason to upgrade to a dual-layered disc.

Size of the game really has nothing to do with the amount of art assets, there are many ways to circumvent art limits and size of the game.

Size of a game almost has everything to do with the audio and movies, and not much else.

Considering that very few (are there even any?) Nintendo made games have voicing, that is why they can be smaller. Has nothing to do with the game itself. HD games on dvd don't include "Unnecessary things", they simply have audio, voicing, and higher resolution textures. That's it.

This Wiiware game has ~40mb and puts to shame 90% of the Wii library.

I really don't care the size of the game these days.

Back in the PSX era I was really impressed when Square Soft released its Final Fantasy and other games in three or even four discs. That was something that talked to me about "quality", sort of speaking.

Nowadays, CG animations have been naturalized, they don't impress that much and sometimes, when no used correctly, they even break the gaming experience.

I do like voices, though, when done well. But there's no real need for a dual disc in most cases.

If they can make a game that fits in a CD and sells 20 millionm why would they?

They're definitely not using cds.

Oh really? Thanks genius, I said the game fits in a CD not that they're using it.

which of their games fit on a cd?

wii sports should, but he guy was just making a comparison.

nintendo is not like sony that tries to max everything like god of war 1-2

though i really like companies that have high goals on the development of games.

well if the game frankly dosn't need to be put on a DL DVD why even bother forcing it on one, your're just upping production costs, both to physically manufacture as well as development by tacking on new and worthless content if the game is fine as it is.

size doesn't matter.. it's about how you use it... >_>

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

No need to. A lot of the games they make fit on a gig or 2.
