STALKER is way better, but it's not really all that scary most of the time.

Both those games would be in my top 5 any way.
People want F.E.A.R. up there and only one complaint about Doom 3? People, you are WRONG! (Well, maybe not but these are serious issues you know.)
Anyway, haven't played too many horror games so I'm not going to write a new list. Those two just sounded pretty bad for a list like that.
Seriously, there's a forum I visit pretty often and there's mostly casual idiots there. Yet every time someone mentions F.E.A.R. being scary, they almost get laughed at. And having played it myself, it's definitely not scary. There are those scary moments here and there but overall, not so much. It's an excellent shooter though, probably the first one where I was impressed by AI. The enemy actually flanked me several times!
Although I agree that Dead Space became a little repetative it still managed to maintain a very tense atmosphere through out for me and definately gave me numerous 'jump' moments up until the end. I think that game has the best use of surround sound I've come across yet (also made myself play the whole thing in the dark which at 24 years old shouldn't make a difference but it still does!).
I thought Alan Wake held a tense atmosphere for the first chapter but then itself became very repetative and although I enoyed the story and game it didn't really manage to maintain that same atmosphere that it created at the start.
Never really been into horror style games but really wish I'd given Silent Hill a go :(
Yea as big of an RE fan as I am, none of the games are particularly scary at all. Just intense. Eternal Darkness and Fatal Frame are ones I would have included on there. FEAR I think should get a mention. Don't think I would have put Condemned though. Great game, but didn't find it particularly creepy... just intense. But yea Silent Hill definitely deserves that number 1 haha.
Where the hell is FEAR and SS2?

I missed most of the decent games on the PS1 and PS2, didn't even know games like Silent Hill, God of War, Ico ect exisisted back then. Here's hoping for a Silent Hill collection!
