Forums - General - Summer's over ... time to make a movie balance

Yes I know, Summer's not actually over, but with all the big, hyped, expensive movies dissapearing from the teather I think it'll interesting to share our opinions about this season, for me it's quite dissapinting but anyway here're my top 5.

The Best

5.- Kick-Ass: This’s actually a quite fun movie and even if didn’t met the hype generated at the Comicon it did quite well for the kind of movie it is. It fun, fast and violet with a great amount of humor. I really like Hit Girl character and still find funny how people complain a lot about her costume and less about the violence.

4.- Scott Pilgrim Vs the World: The poor performance of this movie at the box office has sparkled such a buzz on the internet, forums are filled with anger, youtube users encourage people to watch this movie, other asks Twilight fans to support Scott Pilgrim. Anyway I think it’s a good and fun movie but I understand why so many people let it pass, it’s packed with lots of specific pop-culture refernces, the characters are unlikable and the music is something that doesn’t fit in a general audience. But it’s different and touch a sweet spot for an audience that grow up playing 8-bit games and watching anime and kung fu movies. It’s going to be a cult movie but probably not as popular as other cult classics.

3.- Winter's Bone: It’s unusual to see this kind of movies in summer, but this one get a limited release this season and some teathers are still playing it. It’s freacking awesome, it’s a gritty drama with a suprisinf optimistic feeling about a teen looking for her absent father wich also is a meth cooker. The movie feels very natural, the dialogue, the characters, everything is really well done.

2.- Inception: Honestly I wasn't really excited about this movie. I love Christopher Nolan job but I didn't get the appeal for Leonardo Dicaprio. Thankfully the movie was different, full of action and really interesting, one of those movie that keep you in the seat the whole time.

1.- Toy Story 3: My favorite movie of this season. It has everything I love about movies, good pacing, sympathetic characters, nice story, it was fun to watch and close Andy's story in a great way. Pixar still has the magic and this movie is prove of that.

The Worst

5.- Shrek Forever After: I really hope Dreamworks is done with Shrek, alter 2 good movies the juice is gone, the third was bad and this one is actually worse I don’t think this story can do more, is not funny anymore.

4.- Eclipse: The movie you were forced to watch with your girlfriend. Oh yes, an unlikeable girl being the reason of a war between vampires and werewolves (yes I know they’re not exactly that) I don’t get the appeal of this series, but it doesn’t matter the fans’ll continue supporting this no matter what.

3.- Clash of the Titans: I can can resume this movie in one phrase “Go and watch the original with the beautiful Ray Harryhausen effects”. Clash of the Titans is an example of all the devils about CG, and special effects; specially the horrible “3D” effects.

2.- Iron Man 2: Ok, this one is not the worst movie of the summer but for me it was the most dissapointing. Verything that was cool about the first one is absent from this lously sequel, the end is nice but most of this movie feels like filler, plus I don’t understand why Marvel insists so much about using War Machine, it feels like a pointless character, well maybe they just want to sell more action figures.

1.- Last Airbender: My God, every single frame, second, word, piece of music and set of this movie is just a disaster. The story is cramped, the script is boring, these young actors are completly lost, the fighting are laughable, the music is just there, the pacing is terrible, the overall design is horrible (just look at this hair), bottom line this movie belong to the valhalla of bad movies just like Manos, thanks Mr Shyamalan, you gave us a great lesson about “What not to do” in movie making.

Around the Network

I saw six movies in theaters this summer and I would rank them like this:

6. Predators (It was good but I prefered the idea of the first movie where there was only one Predator)

5. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (It wasn't as bad as I thought it would. I enjoyed)

4. Iron Man 2 (Definitely not as good as the first but not really a suprise)

3. Despicable Me (I liked)

2. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (A very geeky but funny and swell movie)

1. Toy Story 3 (Perhaps my favorite movie ever)

I'd like to go see Inception and Piranha 3-D soon.

I saw Toy Story 3 this summer. Pondered Inception, pondered a few others, but i'm just too lazy to go see movies.

My problem with Scott Pilgrim is Michael Cera. His schtick was funny once (and i mean once: superbad). But no longer.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Totally agree on Last Airbender as the worst movie. I'm pretty sure that movie is not only my worst of this year but of all time. It was just plain apalling. I'll edit this comment later for my full opinion.

I survived the Apocalyps3

Well, I'm just going to go with what I've seen this year so far, instead of just the summer. I hope that's alright.

Favorites:

5. Oceans (With Pierce Brosnan narrating, how can you go wrong? I'm a sucker for the world under the waves, and Oceans for the most part delivers. Sure, there's a lot of things we've seen before: the [necessary] Great White leaping out of the water to swallow the seal whole, the mommy and baby whale, penguins... but there's some great new discoveries as well, such as a fish that has never been filmed other than in this movie. Oceans reminds you that there's more out there than we could possibly imagine, and it's great to be part of the mystery.)

4.The Other Guys ("Aim for the Bushes?". And with that line, The Other Guys may have one of the funniest scenes I've seen for a long time. Ferrel and Wahlberg make for a surprisingly good team, and while the story isn't the strongest, it's the chemistry of the different characters that really drive this comedy home. Michael Keaton, and his TLC quotes, are hilarious. Eva Mendes' interactions wither her husband [Ferrel] are always a treat, and the cameos are well placed. Also, look out for a couple of goons that resemble some key characters in some Tarantino films...)

3. How to Train Your Dragon (This movie is probably the best example of feeling the exhiliration of flight I've ever seen in a movie. Riding along the clouds, soaring past the ocean... well, it's a wonderful feeling to see that. Plus, this is one of the few Post-Avatar movies to actually use 3D in a way that actually enhances the movie in a meaningful way. And while the story isn't the most drastic one [Romeo and Juliet complex of bringing two warring factions together through, in this case, friendship between a boy and a dragon.], it's timeless for a reason.)

2. Inception (Okay, I have to put this out there. Hans Zimmer has created one fantastic soundtrack for this movie. Check it out, and take a listen to "Time", it's just beautiful. Secondly, with this movie, I declare Christopher Nolan king of the modern day blockbuster. Like The Dark Knight, Nolan has created a movie that so many people can enjoy, and yet he's never held back from his inital direction for the movie. The climax for this movie is so incricate, so delicate... yet it all holds together under the immense pressure of the circumstances surrounding it. The movie bends, but never breaks... and the audience is at the edge of their seat for every moment of it. I never really saw it as a Sci-Fi movie, or even a Heist movie... just a great one.)

1. Toy Story 3 (To say that Pixar has done it again... well, they have done just that. Still, they've done so much more. To make it this far into a series of movies... three titles, and come out with even more magic and heart than the first two, now that's a feat of magic right there. It's a movie about many things, like brotherhood, hope, and a childlike joy... and you're always at the edge of your seat, anticipating every second. The final scene... well, it touches the heart in a way that few movies have ever done. Plus, the fact that this movie kicked Transformers 2 out of the top 10 hightest domestic grossing movies earns it bonus points as well.)

Most Disappointing/Blech:

4. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Another movie that is by no means bad, but just somewhat disappointing. I really [really] wanted to like this movie. I think Edgar Wright is brilliant for his directing roles in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. As a video game nerd I love the references in the movie, both subtle and in your face. Still, I could never fall in love with the movie. I think the movie was just too in love with itself to let me in. Doesn't really help that Michael Cera once again played himself. There's some great one liners, and some of the Evil Ex's are great [Chris Evan's was fantastic]... but other than that... I felt like I was listening to indie rock at a bowling alley. It's just there.)

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street (Contains none of the imagination of the original. The deaths are bland, and the characters are yawn-worthy. Don't know why I even bothered...)

2. Alice in Wonderland (When you think of Tim Burton, you think of all the zany and off the wall ideas he comes up with. Wheny you think of Louis Carroll, you think of all of the zany and off the wall ideas that he comes up with too. Then how can Alice in Wonderland play it so safe? It's maddening at how this moive plays out like so many before it. Now, it's not necessarily a bad movie in the sense of the word... but when it comes to what could have been... Alice in Wonderland is my biggest disappointment so far this year. Also, Mr. Burton... the creature is called the Jabberwock. The piece of literature is called the Jabberwocky. How you got that wrong... well it's quite beyond me.)

1. Clash of the Titans (It's cheese, and it's not Gouda. Also, if Avatar is how to do 3D right, then this movie is the antithesis. I actually laughed at the sheer awfulness of some of the 3D effects [where he throws the coin into the water... ugh]. It's just... not a good movie... bad way to start off the summer.)

Good:

Inception: By good I mean very good. Came out of this with a huge grin on my face, fantastic plot which was just twisted enough without becoming pretentious. The entire movie felt grounded in some sort of reality, which I love in a sci-fi.

Toy Story 3: Also fantastic. Better than either of the first two by a country mile.

Bad:

Shrek Forever After: Bleh. Played out and used. Better than three by a good margin though.

Alice In Wonderland: Was so extremely let down by this. It was just a straightforward and below average action flick. Tim Burton Alice In Wonderland should be fucking awesome. But it wasn't. The worst bit is where they showed the clips of Alice as a child doing the things she did in the actual story, it was like he was taunting us with what the movie should have been like. Alice in Wonderland (the book) was completely surreal, the movie was absurdly straightforward.

Also doing every film I saw this year in Theaters.

Worst:

The Other Guys

Predators

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Best:

Get Him to the Greek

Toy Story 3

Inception

Wow, I didn't see that many movies at all. Still this year has been a massive disappointment.

Please Watch/Share this video so it gets shown in Hollywood.

Wait, Alice in Wonderland is not a summer movie!

Otherwise it would be my second favorite!

Out of the ones I saw I liked Iron Man 2.  I liked Inception(though I did fall asleep during it).  I'm mixed about the Expendables.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Here is a list, from best to worst, of all the movies I've seen in 2010 at theaters or on DVD (that released in 2010 at theaters):

  • Inception A
  • Toy Story 3 A
  • The Book of Eli A
  • Shutter Island A-
  • Kick-Ass A-
  • Daybreakers A-
  • Robin Hood B
  • Edge of Darkness B
  • Twilight: Eclipse B
  • Shrek Forever After B
  • Clash of the Titans B
  • Legion B
  • The Expendables B-
  • Diary of A Wimpy Kid B-
  • Iron Man 2 B-
  • Alice In Wonderland C
  • Nightmare on Elm Street C-
  • Valentines Day C-

Essentially, anything below a B- for me was a dissapointmnet. Wolfman was by far the worst, though. God only knows why I paid $13 for AiW too.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
