Forums - Sales - 16 Million PS3 sold/shipped in Europe to date

As said before in the other threads Sony are either over shipping or these consoles are sitting around in shops waiting to be sold. Eventually Chart Track will announce the UK numbers at the end of the year. Seeing as UK is by far the biggest gaming region in Europe we will see from those numbers how acurate VGC has been. And i think personally they will be pretty acurate. And if those numbers don't show a huge PS3 sales difference then i think we can assume these numbers are bogus. Until then i would be careful with accusations because when those numbers come out your comments could come back to bite you on the ass. Just because Sony throw a number around doesn't mean it is what they have sold....

Using the data below I think we can all agree that logically it doesn't make sense. There is something off in the VGC accounting for the PS3 overall. However, I don't think it is just being under-tracked in Europe, but probably over-tracked in other regions.

So, in total VGC isn't off by much, especially not any amount to make anybody scream OMG PS3 IS REALLY WINNING!!!!!

I bet VGC is off by less than 1m worldwide if there were a way to know exactly how much shifted to the end user.

*Data through end of June to compare VGC others/europe with Sony shipped figures.*

VGC Americas VCG Japan VGC Others VGC % of total sales
 PS3     14,310,511    5,307,180    16,164,502 45%

Sony Europe Sony % of total ship On Shelves in Europe % of total on shelves
   18,000,000 47%    1,835,498 83%

VGC Total Sony Total On Shelves Total est on shelves amer/jp
   35,782,193    38,000,000    2,217,807               382,309

I disagree greatly

SONY ANNOUNCED 38.1 M LTD sales for ps3 as of JUNE 2010

Sony announced a 160GB PS3 today, and it is shipping, the 120GB model did not receive a discount, which shows to me that they aren't much in stock..

So how does that lead to a 2 MILLION amount of consoles on store shelves? Makes zero sense, and I am not betting, but it would not surprise me if the consumer sales are off.. for ps3

1. I said at most 1m low, which would mean I think the number on shelves WORLDWIDE is actually closer to 1.2m not 2.2m.

2. That is a perfectly normal situation for any company, hell, 2m really isn't unexpected.

3. Sony announced the new skus for Europe, there is no way they intend on selling the 120gb unit for the same price as the 160gb unit. It will be discounted as a clearance price when the full NA details come out. Keep in mind this is just a HDD change and box change, so a change in production wasn't that costly in terms of time it takes. So, they could have made that switch easily and just started shipping the 160gb units almost seamlessly over the last couple of weeks.

4. The shipped numbers being discussed have nothing to do with the 160gb unit as these are rounded numbers from their quarterly report which ended months ago. As such you can't derive anything from the new skus that relates to what was shipped/sold back then.

1. The aren't rounded..

2. The 160gb is in stock and shipping in the U.S right now..

3. They did not discount the 120gb in the U.S indicating that they barely have 120gb systems on store shelves.

So what it tells me is that, the fact the 120gb is not being discounted in EUROPE or anywhere else, gives me the belief that there are barely any ps3's lying in "shops" or store shelves.. because the 160GB is not shipping in a month, but shipping right now. There is also no way in hell they over stocked their shipping channel with 120gb ps3's and counted them as "sold"  because the 120gb has been discontinued.

So...?

You really think a number that ends in all zero's on a PR presentation is not rounded? Do you even know how manufacturing/shipping works? Its just not that pretty.

Quote this... Within a few days you will see 120gbs on sale. May not be a big announcement by Sony, but will be in retailers websites/potentially adverts.

I always go through the gaming section of the store I'm in and this last weekend I was shopping for random crap and went to Target, Walmart, and Best Buy. All 3 had numerous 120gbs in stock on their shelves. Who knows what was in 'the back'.

I didn't deny the 160gb was avail right now, I said at the end of June the shipped numbers being reported had nothing to do with the 160gb model therefore discussing it in relation to those numbers doesn't make any sense.

They probably stopped shipping 120s a couple of weeks ago when they started shipping 160s, wouldn't have been much transition time when only packaging and a hdd 3rd party component changed. Maybe a week of no shipments at most?

if shipping in the U.S EXACTLY BUT U.S NUMBERS ARE RIGHT ON VGC and WE HAVE NPD DATA so think twice. Is on Europe where there´s much more overshipping thats why Console isnt being selled yet here...

Yes but they aren't rounded by A MILLION super chunk.. notice it's rounded to 38.1M so its probably in reality somewhere in between 38.050-38.1M

which is barely anything..

When did I say it was rounded by a million? I figure its being rounded at the hundred thousand level.

yea and probably rounded up by as much as 50,000... which again is nothing

ohhhh, now I know why you're making such a big deal about rounding... if you notice (probably at the same time as it was originally quoted) my initial post does not include any discussion of rounding as it does in the first time another user quoted it.

Originally I thought the PR report said 38m, so I figured they were rounding at the millions, however, I quickly realized I was wrong and it mentioned 38.1m, therefore I removed my paragraph about rounding that could make these numbers a little more off than what they are in reality.
