Ow please.. we all know that 10 million ps3's are just used as Blu Ray Players... >_>

Thats bullshit, I might buy that their used primary as blu ray players but the owner would definitely pick up the occasional game, besides as long as the console is working it counts as install base

I agree that is bullshit, why are people still bringing that shit up?

I know a videophile who bought the PS3 at launch as a Blu Ray player. He doesnt own any games and has never rented a game. He doesnt like playing games !

Plus its in connected to the main family TV so if he's not watching a movie the TV is being used for its primary function by his other half.

Shall I pop round and tell him he doesnt exist ?

Go for it tell your imaginary made up friend he doesn't exist lol, but even if you aren't lying maybe a few thousand people at the absolute most

Oh he exists and Sony are pleased to have his non gaming ass. He must own over 100 Blu Rays.

As for a few thousand at most ! Try to bear in mind that at launch the PS3 was by far the cheapest, best and most versatile Blu Ray player on the market.

I would say up to half a million are used exclusively for media playback. Maybe even more.

Of course I admit any numbers are guess work but you have to remember the situation at the time.

We will however never know for sure.

The thing is even if the person initial intended not to buy any games for ps3 if they see a game they think is interesting in a bargain bin they are going to buy it, so I find it hard to believe that there is no games between multiplats and exclusives that someone who is up on tech enough to have a blu ray player wouldn't enjoy and most people would eventually get a game

Plenty of PS3 owners picked up a slim to replace their older models. 360 has a bigger install base.

Although that is true, for everyone one that replaced their old model with a slim theres probably about 3 that did it for the jasper and about 1 that did it again for the 360 silm

Oh ok you're right. I must be imagining things then when every person I know owns a 360 and I can count on one hand how many people own a PS3. Its time for you to buy a calendar and realize this isn't 1999 when Sony dominated. The 360 has sold more consoles, has a bigger install base, and is annihilating the PS3 in USA and will continue to do so. In the others region its a heated battle. Sony has Japan and always will.

Its stupid to use your own experience to judge the overall rates of anything. I really hope you are 13 or so or that you never attended college. Most of the people I know suprisingly own both equally does that mean Americans own the 360 and PS3 equally, Hell no.

A look at the sales numbers tell you that it is the 360.

and one look at the failrate tells you it's the ps3

The 43 percent failrate was an anecdotal figure from a repair centre at the height of the problem.

Even if true it's an unreliable figure which pertains to only the launch Xbox machines.

The failure rate for the reworked machines Oct 07 onwards was rumoured to be much much lower.

Applying the 43 percent to all Xbox's sold since launch is at best sensationalist at worst disingenuous

Actually it seems that in 2009 the attach rate was higher on the PS3. Tough it may be related to better exclusives, not necessarily more console.

"The PlayStation 3 enjoyed 115.6 million software sales in the Sony’s 2009-fiscal year (runs from May 1st 2009 to April 30th 2010), up from 2008’s 103.7 million units. Surprisingly, despite a lower hardware installed base, this performance was better than that of the Xbox 360, which achieved 103.1 million software sales. The PS3’s boost is sure to have been caused by a number of key exclusive releases, such as God of War III."

And the attach rates say it's the 360.

Like i said... It's impossible to find out for sure. There are too many factors swaying the numbers all over the place.

The facts we have though point towards it being the 360.

actually it was a number from a poll in 2010

Finally the word online poll has fallen:

You have no proof they have a bigger install base, and they haven't annihilated the ps3 in the usa, they are beating them by a healthy margin in the usa but thats about the only place, 360 is losing ground in almost every other place, hell the 360 isn't even sold in all the countries the ps3 is and with the failrate people aren't too keen to import, the only accurate thing about that statement is the 360 sold more then the 360 and thats not even over the same time period

You have no proof that the 360 doesn't have a bigger install base, but my theory of it having a bigger install base makes more sense since the 360 has actually sold more consoles. And I would say 24 mil vs 14 in the biggest gaming market is pretty close to annihilation. Especially when Sony's previous console dominated as much as it did. In case you haven't been paying attention the past 2 months the 360 has already almost made up all ground it lost the past year of the PS3 slim release. Give it a couple more months and we're back to square one.

On that site it actually says the 360 has a better attach ratio.

8.8 to the PS3's 8.1

I'm sure the 360's is somewhere around the 10 mark though...

So... does this mean that 63% of ps3 are bought as a bluray-player?! :O

Oh wait.. some people have gotten their ps3 with their HDTV. Count those 2 together and now we know that 99% of the people who bought ps3 did not buy it for the games. Right? :O
