Forums - General - Need help in purchasing a new TV (Also handing out cookies to helpers!!)

Hey guys. I'm looking to purchase a new TV and looking for a good price and probably a package deal. I'm very interested in picking up a 3D TV so I only have to purchase once early instead of purchasing a regular HD now and then repurchasing in a few years when 3D content is widely available across movies, games and TV. I can be persuaded out of that logic if you guys insist though. I have a few questions for those knowledgeable enough to answer them.

1. Are the current crop of 3D LED and Plasma TVs going to be relevant in a few years, or is there a new technology likely to take over by then?

2. What sort of 3D content is available now and what is going to be added over the next 6-12 months? I'm interested in movies, games and TV content, including tv shows and especially sports.

3. I have a 4 year old, so kids movies are partially why I want a 3D set. How much exposure to this set is good for her? Not looking for a moral argument, just a health one.

4. I was looking at this package deal. It's a Samsung 58" 3D Plasma TV, 3D BluRay player, 4 pairs of the 3D glasses and the Monsters vs. Aliens DVD for $2,451.00 with no tax and free shipping. How is this deal in general? Is it worth doing? Are there better deals out there?

Thanks for the help in advance. Will be prepping the cookies momentarily. ;)

Come on people. I need help and there's fresh cookies waiting to be eaten. Don't make me fatten myself up by eating them all myself.

Any cookies you made would be stale by now!

But with regards to your number 3 point I think Nintendo themselves said children shouldn't be exposed to 3D for longer than 2 hours at a time or something like that...

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Well it depends.

1. Do the current 3D glasses give you a headache?

2. Do you find anything wrong with the colour reproduction in 3D?

3. Can you wait for a new TV until next year?

Tease.

Buy the one with the best stats and price.  Where's my freakin cookie?

1. No. I don't plan on sitting 8 hours straight in front of the TV with the glasses though. 2-3 hours max depending on what I'm watching. I did about 30 minutes at Best Buy in front of their display unit and the glasses seem fine.

2. Not yet, but I've only demoed a TV for half an hour. It's going to be hard to get any other interaction with a unit outside of an electronics store because no one I know has one. The colors look fine. The 3D pops as well as it does in the theater.

3. Probably not. I want a new set for football season, as I'm currently nursing an old 32" 720P off brand TV that has a slight amount of permanent burn in on the left side. Best I could probably do would be to wait for Black Friday, but frankly this deal is very good, and even during the holiday season I can't imagine the price improving much more considering how few sites nowadays let New Yorkers get away with not paying tax online. In comparison, this exact package with two less pair of glasses costs just a shade over $3000 on Amazon, tax included.

Well then I say go for it. The Plasmas are better 3D sets at present and you need a new TV obviously. Have you looked up any reviews for any particular quirks you might not have picked up on?

I checked all the Amazon reviews. The set has 4.5/5 stars and most people are gushing over the set. The only 1 star review came from a guy that was complaining about his TV getting delivered broken, but said in the review that the TV itself was of high quality. One guy claims to have returned like 4 other Samsung 3D TVs between the different models before settling down satisfied with this one. I think the only gripe is the sound quality coming from the speakers but that doesn't concern me as I'll be using a surround system. Here's the review page:

Only issue I saw in some reviews was "poor handling of 1980P 24FPS content". Everything else is, uses more power than an LCD ZOMG.

Maybe if you can take a look at one, bring along your own 1080P 24FPS blu ray and try that out if it concerns you.
