Forums - General - Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada discusses console war

I think it's fair to say that there are some Wii owners who are bringing down the Wii's attach rate because they only play WiiSports.

However, that won't matter in the long term. When the Wii gets to be easier to find, Nintendo will start picking up the hardcore gamers who aren't already onboard. If they cut it to $150, it'll be really hard for gamers with money to burn to pass it up.

By the end of this generation, the Wii is going to be the common denominator of gaming. I predict that most PC, 360, and PS3 owners will end up picking one up at some point. Maybe not in 2008, but some time. And some of the WiiSports players will be adventurous and try new things.

I think we are all missing the point. He clearly thinks the 360 is fucking awesome and is bring Final Fantasy 13 to the console.

I find it funny how desperate people are to have FFXIII on the 360... It isn't going to happen, has been confirmed that it isn't numerous times!

Some people just don't listen i suppose...

the low attach arguement could also be applied to ps3 owners who bought it for blu-ray movies only

“The Wii is the antithesis of the Xbox 360. It's strictly for hardcore gamers. The attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is much higher than for the Wii. People who buy the 360 really like games,” he said. “I think the current trend is that most people aren't buying the Wii as a game machine, but as a toy... It seems that Sony isn't sure what it wants to do. Is it making high-end electronics or a game console for gamers? I want them to clearly define their console.”

SE is already a company in decline, and to dismiss the #1 console as a toy, is just foolish. They will realize the error of their ways when FFXIII is released. Final Fantasy XII sold 4.95 million, a respectable sum but far from the amount the series sold in its prime. This was on a system which sold 117.89 million units. Even if PS3 doubles its sales by the time FFXIII is released, we're looking at very poor sales if the attach ratio doesn't greatly improve.

Well said damkira. Square Enix is totally missing the big picture here. Why the attach ratio is lower? Because the ratio from good/crappy games is lower. They could really reign here if they did it correctly, just like they did with FFVII on the PSOne. Not that I like it, but it was succesful in an ocean of subpar games.

For the record, I was going to say what Naznatips said.

In fact, I was typing up a response, and Naznatips somehow used his mod powers and stole my text.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I think that a valid definition would be that Xbox and Wii are both toys, or both gaming machines. There is no difference in what they do, or what are they made for.

So, the statement from SE CEO fails miserably

.

I wouldn't get upset about his use of the word toy. It is a translation so there may be other connotations that are missed out on.

Also, games would sell better on the wii if square enix would release some :). Or better ones in the case of Dragon Quest Swords (which might be a million seller if it went worldwide).

The Wii has the same attach rate as the PS3, and almost the same attach rate the 360 had at this point in its lifecycle.
I definitely don't understand how the most important people in this industry can have such basic market analysis.

The Wii is a toy, people only play Wii Sports on it. The 360 and PS3 are hard core so that's where the games sell. This analysis is totally off, you can't just sum things like that if you know just a bit what you're talking about...
