Forums - PC - PC Devs Abandoning Microsoft For Valve

I actually liked the gfwl in game interface, but steams is far better. I hoping for video/hd video chat in steam someday. I would love it if they would offer movies and tv shows on steam too. :)

More and more developers are leaving the GFWL service due to Microsoft's lack of effort in improving their own platform. PC gamers cheer for the death of GFWL! Bethesda switched over to Steam with Fallout: New Vegas, even though Fallout 3 was GFWL. Brink too will support Steamworks. THQ and Volition are leaving GFWL over Steamworks with their new title Red Faction: Armageddon. It's predecessor, Red Faction: Guerrilla, used GFWL. EIDOS is also abandoning the infamous Microsoft's service. Kane and Lynch 2 will be a Steamworks title, even though the first game used GFWL! Of course, this switch may very well be explained by the fact that Square Enix now owns EIDOS(SE's Last Remnant used Steamworks). 2K Games too is disappointed by Microsoft, as Mafia II will use Steamworks, breaking their GFWL usage Streak in big PC games. There are more examples of Devs leaving Microsoft for Valve, but you get the impact. Amazing Steamworks titles are coming to Steam in the near future, here's some of them: - Mafia II - Kane and Lynch 2 - Fallout: New Vegas - Civilization V - R.U.S.E. - Darksiders - Red Faction: Armageddon - Brink - Portal 2 - Torchlight 2 Long live the death of GFWL!

Now why would you like the competition to die? It might lower the prices if there are more competition on digital downloads!

Because GFWL can't even be called "copetition" it's so pathetic and shitty. The sooner it gets out of PC gamig the better it is going to get.

What is so shitty about it? Don't you think they can improve?

The only improvement they have done in the past 4 or 5 years that's any good is not requiring PC gamers to pay to play online. They were so retarded they actually expected PC gamers to be as blinded and ignorant as the console ones and pay to play multiplayer. Since that change, there have been no changes to change its crappy structure, I guess they added a "games on demand" but that doesn't make the core of GFWL any good.

Damn.. don't get banned. Because I think you are the one who could answer my thread at pc-forums.

Good, and bad. Abandoning GfWL is good, for Valve is bad. I have nothing against games supporting Steam, however I have a lot against games requiring Steam. Steam is, in a way, worse than other DRM since it locks the game to a single account with no option to let go of the game (sell it for example). Other than that, it's mostly fine. I still don't like the fact that I need a third-party program to run a game, especially since it does require an online activation.

Long live the death of GFWL!

wait so you want it to die slowly? I would prefer it to die quick if it is going to die.

Relic just abandoned GFWL in favour of Steamworks for their upcoming game Space Marine! Another bites the dust.

Relic used GFWL in Dawn of War 2, but it had so many problems because of GFWL, that many PC gamers complained and gave bad reputation to both the game and GFWL. Also, the main reason Relic used GFWL was because it allowed the selling of DLC, which Steam didn't allow back then. But now Steam allows DLC sales, and shows that Steam keeps evolving at a tremendous pace while Microsoft isn't making enough effort to appease PC gamers.

That's some crazy talk... not 3 years ago Steam was a barren waste land with Valve games and some other bullshit... GFWL just this year became a stand alone service and not just a background service and just because something runs on GFWL doesn't mean it can't be sold through steam as you see with Fallout 3

Judging by the initial post here, even Microsoft look like they're finally acknowledging just how completely shit GFWL is- http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=404721 - it's an excellent thread in which GFWL's deficiencies are comprehensively pointed out and how it can be improved is discussed.

sony teaming with valve may be a decision may help them alot next gen since portal 2 will be steamworks compatible on the ps3.

big games microsoft have halo and gears but both are made from third party studios. pretty much the rest is not exclusive,

I think the most surprising thing is that Ubisoft dropped their awful DRM on R.U.S.E., and are going to use Steamworks for the game now.

That's best news ever. If they go steam i might buy HoMM 6 which otherwise would be very painfull decision.

As for GFWLive going down it's also very good. I hated that abomination.
