Good, and bad. Abandoning GfWL is good, for Valve is bad. I have nothing against games supporting Steam, however I have a lot against games requiring Steam. Steam is, in a way, worse than other DRM since it locks the game to a single account with no option to let go of the game (sell it for example). Other than that, it's mostly fine. I still don't like the fact that I need a third-party program to run a game, especially since it does require an online activation.
