Fact remains that Sony said that specific titles would be offered, so it's kind of weird to complain that you want discount on all possible games / whatever after having paid for the subscription.
It's a consumer's mind that always wants more for less, even though the "rules" have been stipulated from the get-go.
If that's really a dealbreaker for you, then it's obvious that PlayStation Plus will lose a subscription once its time runs out.
More exclusive content and additional network features would make the paid service a better sell.
That being said, if any exclusive content being distributed through Plus was worth subscribing for, it's pretty reasonable to say that SCE would probably rack up a lot more sales and revenue by selling the content separately as well. The occasional (or even weekly) dynamic theme or avatar icon pack doesn't really cut it as exclusive content either.
The downside of Plus is that a lot of the free content being distributed to subscribers is NOT exclusive content and is typically material that has already been available through PSN, often for quite some time, which brings us back to the reasonable argument that if something that is now being given away with the Plus service is worth subscribing for, odds are you already bought it unless you're relatively new to the PS3 and PSN.
Over a year, there's no question that subscribers will have downloaded several times what they paid for their subscription in free and limited license content, but maybe the question that should be asked is whether subscribers would have downloaded even half that content had it not been included with their subscription fee.
End result: if you want the most out of your paid subscription, play more PS3 games (the Plus content) and basically use your PS3 more to get better mileage out of the subscription. The same thing applies to XBL Gold. You're more apt to play online if that's the main thing you're paying for with your subscription. Not too many people keep their paid subscription so they can play online once every week or so.
But overall, Plus is not a bad service. It gives paid subscribers extra content where as Gold simply takes away the basics from regular subscribers (no online play, 1 week delay for demos, etc.). It would just benefit from better network communications tools (chat, etc.), which is something SCE really doesn't need to charge for as an "exclusive" service anyway.

I've mostly just seen people who are excited about the service and thus have subcribed, or people that have no interest in the service and thus haven't. I've seen much indifference, but little hate (outside of the possibility of cross game voice chat being PS Plus exclusive).
PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold are quite dissimilar products, so I'm not sure why raging against one would equate to raging against the other. One you're paying for online play and party chat. The other you're paying for games, discounts, and things like Qore. It's features vs content.
A developer must still store all other data relating to a game's online mode themselves. Even if a game uses a P2P system for online (using a player's 360 as a host instead of a server maintained by the developer), they must still keep track of any information regarding rank, perks, leaderboards, and whatnot. It's a myth that playing a 360 title online costs Microsoft money. Microsoft incurs costs due to the provision of a unified and always accessible online service. It costs them money to store a person's Live profile, achievement information, friends list, and purchase history, as well as any bandwidth costs associated with the retrieval of such information and downloading items from their store. These costs are inherent to anybody connected to Xbox Live, whether they're actually playing a game online or not. The actually costs for playing online are taken on by the developer, who have the option of either providing dedicated servers (like EA's sports titles) or going with a P2P system (like Gears of War), which uses your 360 and your bandwidth to host the game. In the end Xbox Live does cost quite a penny to maintain, as does the PlayStation Network, and both companies have to cover thoses costs somehow. Microsoft pulls in extra revenue by walling off online play behind a subscription fee and pushing microtransactions for Avatars. Sony does this buy providing a premium content package in Plus and pushing microtransactions in Home. |
Well developers rarely make much of an effort to maintaining information you mentioned. But the games are definitely using MS's servers which eliminates cost. I believe EA is the only developer that runs their own servers and they killed online play on several of their older 360 games already. Which is proof keeping those servers up cost money. Sega supports Phantasy Star Universe on the 360 only, I assume this is because they use MS's servers.
Also, I remember reading that Sony charges publishers for bandwidth... "Dubbed the "PlayStation Network Bandwidth" fee, the rate Sony charges publishers amounts to 16 cents per Gigabyte, according to MTV’s Multiplayer blog. Free content, such as game demos, only rack up charges for the first 60 days they are available, but bandwidth costs for paid downloadable content are billed to the publisher essentially forever."
All I'm saying is charging for online play not only benefited MS greatly but it also helped developers/publishers keep cost down. And considering how successful its been, Sony would be crazy not to eventually charge for online play as well. PSN Plus is a joke right now, but like I said its just helping the transition to charging for online play. Something they used to boast about offering for free. I really don't see them boasting about it anymore, I wonder why?

But this was a known fact before PS Plus was even available and it is in every pop up for every item you purchase, so did you know that going in and still are saddened by it or was it unclear to you (not trolling, just asking :))?

I didn't get it because of that. Also yes I would know going in, those who don't know going in and than complain about it are just being silly.

I'll take myself as an "average" of all the PS users since I'm sort of middle of the road not casual but not super hardcore must play everything gamer.
As a PS Plus subscriber I've paid $50 and so far have gotten:
WipeoutHD 15 month rental.
A bunch of minis 15 month rental.
Syphon Filter 15 month rental.
Other things which I would have bought/gotten if I didn't already own:
Critter Crunch 15 month rental
$2.50 of of MK II
So, taking me as an average case, the "average" PS Plus user has received $2.50 worth of discounts on games that they want to buy and have 1 PSN game, 5 minis and 1 PSOne game on a 15 month rental.
So far for one month of service, I don't think that's half bad. Obviously there are people that wouldn't buy any of the games on discount or who already bought CC, WipeoutHD, Syphon filter and all of the minis haven't received much yet but I think the average PS Plus user has already gotten a few bucks worth of discounts and a few good games to "rent" for a year already.

You are so wrong, the only MS servers would be for MS games. Even then most games use matchmaking servers only which cost a pretty minor amount, barely noticable and is paid for by the developer, not MS. Most games are run P2P which uses a players connection.
LIVE covering server costs is a huge farce since there are no servers for most games, just players using their own bandwidth. |
Perhaps some information is kept in servers while the game itself is generally played P2P. Regardless, it keeps cost down of maintaining a server for the developer/publisher.
Calling it a farce though, I can't agree with that.
