Forums - Gaming - Looking at Each Console's Million Sellers (360 Edition)

I was thinking to myself one bright and cheery day and thought, "Ya know Smeags, I wonder what I can learn by looking at each console's million sellers. It sure would tell me a lot about each console's demographic!" So using the vast resources here at VGChartz, I think I'll do just that.

So let's see what we can learn from each console's Million Sellers (cause you guys know how much I love these Million Sellers!)

Xbox 360 Edition:

E(veryone): Forza Motorsport 2, Sega SuperStars Tennis, Forza Motorsport 3, FIFA Soccer 10, Madden NFL 10, Madden NFL 08, Madden NFL 09, Pure, FIFA Soccer 09, Project Gotham Racing 4, Madden NFL 07, Viva Pinata, Need for Speed: Shift, FIFA Soccer 08, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, NBA 2K9, Pro Evolution Soccer 2007, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009.

  • 18 Titles (18% of the 360's Million Sellers).
  • Except for Viva Pinata, every other E rated game is either a sports or a racing title.

E(veryone) 10 and up: Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, Kung Fu Panda, Lego Batman: The Videogame, Need for Speed: Prostreet, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Project Gotham Racing 3, Need for Speed: Carbon, Burnout Paradise.

  • 8 Titles (8% of the 360's Million Sellers).
  • The top three sellers in this category were heavily bundled. Other than Kung Fu Panda, the Lego series and Racing games dominate the list.

T(een): Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Call of Duty 2, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Rock Band, Call of Duty 3, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Rock Band 2, Fight Night Round 3, UFC 2009 Undisputed, Halo Wars, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Final Fantasy XIII, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008, Street Fighter IV, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Need for Speed: Undercover, Soul Calibur 4, Battlefield: Bad Company, Fight Night Round 4, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, 007: Quantum of Solace, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Mercinaries 2: World in Flames, The Simpsons Game, Mirror's Edge.

  • 31 Titles (32% of the 360's Million Sellers).
  • Despite the top selling Teen games being Guitar Hero, there's still many different genres represented here. Getting much more diverse.

M(ature): Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Grand Theft Auto 4, Call of Duty: World at War, Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Halo 3: ODST, Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Red Dead Redemption, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Resident Evil 5, Bioshock, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, Mass Effect, Saint's Row, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas, Saint's Row 2, Mass Effect 2, Dead Rising, Borderlands, Dragon Age: Origins, Army of Two, Crackdown, Far Cry 2, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, Perfect Dark 0, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, Bioshock 2, Devil May Cry 4, Prototype, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent, The Orange Box, Dead Space, Dead or Alive 4.

  • 41 Titles (42% of the 360's Million Sellers).
  • Many games here fall into the shooter category, but the games themselves fall into many other subgenres. Still, there's some diversity with plenty of WRPGs, Sandbox games and other Action games.

So there ya go. Here's the breakdown for 360's Club of Million Sellers. Surprised? Confused? Hungry? Well, we can talk about it here (except for the hungry part, get yourself a sammich!).

Great work. Well done.

It would seem the more older gamer owns the 360 ( or at least likes to spend the money on titles more often ).

It's no surprise as such though. The 360 is definately the place for RPG's this gen. With the best exclusives in the genre and usually getting DLC or timed exclusitivity on DLC for games or whole games. Same with shooters. It has the best shooters around with the highest played online for those to.

Be interesting if M$ can change the younger audience demographic with Kinect.

Again good job.

Thank you Selnor. ^_^

I just thought of this subject every time I hear someone generalize a console's top selling games.

360's just a shooter box!
Wii? Haha, only kids play games on that!
PS3 can't sell any games!

etc. etc. etc.

Just because a console has a certain demographic, doesn't mean it should be looked down on. So I thought I'd make a list of the million sellers and break them down, so we can see what's really going on.

I was actually surprised at the diversity of the 360's Million Sellers to be quite honest. There's a whole bunch of diverse games and genres being represented (especially in the T rating). Consider me pleasantly surprised.

Yeah totally agree.

The term shooter box is so far from the actual truth of 360 these days.

I would definately suggest the 360 over any other home console for any RPG fan for example.

Racing genre as well. People forget the 360 has 3 sim games, and more Arcade racers thanks to the amazing PGR 3 and 4.

Shooters is obvious.

Even the Horror/Thriller genre I would recommend a 360 now to thanks to Resi being on it, Dead Rising and the sublime Alan Wake.

M$ have done a fantastic job killing the shooter name, and winning many genres right now.

excellent... good work.

Thank you.

To tell the truth (since you're one to seek out truth and justice), the reason why this is on the Gaming board was because I was going to originally do every console in that one post. Of course, once I realized what I was gettting myself into, I decided to do it in seperate sections, staring with the 360.

We'll see how it goes.

Nice.

I can't wait to see the Wii lol

No Pie charts?  Percentage comparison's need Pie charts!

Interesting info.  Any chance of adding a split between SP only and Online titles?  That's a demographic view I'd like to see, possibly by rating, too.

For me the other statstic often not looked at is online gameplay.  I'd be interested to know what's being played the most - I mean, I know in advance it's going to be shooters (not just for 360 but PS3, too) but I'd be curious to see just how much shooters dominate online.  Although technically a lot of those titles aren't seen as 'just shooters' it's obvious that action dominates the console - and I'm expecting the PS3 to look very similar.

Finally, a split of exclusives vs multi would also be good to see - although with the 360 you'd be entering the console exclusive minefield!

Oh, and Pie charts please!

It's interesting just how big the Lego titles are, now, on all platforms.

Final thought - what percentage of million sellers were bundled (I mean majorly, like Kung Fu Panada, not special bundles and the like)?  That would also be interesting to highlight some of the title that got a helping.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

To be completely honest, I stopped reading at pie. So bear with me.

Actually, it would be fun to keep expanding this thread with more and more comparisons, such as what you've already mentioned. My initial thought was obviously rating in regards to million sellers, but as you stated, there's a lot more to it than that.

As for the bundled part, I originally had some of that in, but the problem is that there's been different amounts of bundling, from the heavily bundled (Kung Fu Panda) to the lightly bundled (FFXIII). Maybe I should just refrence those that are heavily/lightly bundled and be done with it.

As for the exclusives, are you crazy man? Someone will hear you!
