I am not downplaying it, I just thought that most people have no idea what the Asperger syndrome is all about, so I explained it briefly. The story of this kid is nothing spectacular, it's the normal course a person with Asperger syndrome is expected to take.

The most important thing to note here is that the Asperger syndrome is not a bad thing and doesn't make a person any worse than "normal" people.

I have no idea why you would feel the need to explain any such thing in this thread...no one is pitying anyone or anything...I really do not want to get into this now, not in this thread. So let's just stop it here

Because it puts things in perspective. If you don't know what exactly the Asperger syndrome is, then the story of this young boy probably is touching for most people. That he suddenly starts to talk a lot and that even to people who doesn't know, like when he was invited to that community day. But he primarily talks about LBP, his new found hobby. This isn't really getting out of his shell, it falls in line with the normal development of a kid with Asperger syndrome.

Quick, contact his parents and tell them to quit on that silly hope stuff.

You know, maybe the need to come into a thread like this and ruin it for everyone should rather make you think about your own state of mind, and don't tell me you would have done the same if the Story was about Super Mario Bros.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

really? do you even know people with that syndrome? do you know people who work with that kind of people. i think the main point here is that the kid wasnt communicative until the parents gave him the game and he started talking to the parents and people about the game.

the point is: the parents now have a child who communicates with them, even if it's just about his hobby, about that world he lives in he's talking TO them. and that's a big deal for those parents so i don't get your point. do you even have one? and people with asperger syndrome are not normal. they need help and people who dedicate themselves to them to help integrate them even if just a little.

little big planet was obviously a big deal in that family's life since it changed their routine.

your "contribution" was rather pointless

Hey guys,

I am here to offer another look at these stories.

Regarding the first half, Rare used to employ people who didn't have a background in the video game industry. For example, Lee Schuneman (director of Diddy Kong Racing and others) used to sell swimming pools before making video games.

As for the second part, people with Asperger syndrome usually avoid social contacts because their brains work differently and interactions/conversations with other people are more difficult for them due to that. In a nutshell, they lack the "Theory of Mind" which refers to the ability to recognize and understand thoughts, intentions and wishes of other people to know what they want or predict what they will do next. This is not about what other people say, it's about how they say something and how they act while talking. So it's all about interpretation.

People with Asperger syndrome like to be alone, can have eccentric obsessions at times and whenever they have to talk with people, they prefer to talk extensively about their hobby, because that is something they have a lot of knowledge about and at the same time it allows them to control the conversation.

So in both cases, it's nothing unheard of or unexpected. Still good for the Media Molecule guys though.

Sorry, Rol, this one wasn't one of your better or necessary posts.

Whether intended or not you come of sounding like you want to downplay the association to the title and you're going to get picked up on for that.

EDIT: too late!  You alread have been.

I know (and look after) some kids with Aspergers so I know you're right, technically - but I don't think the post was really necessary.  No one was saying this was like a ray of sunshine from the TV caused a miralce.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Wow, another thread ruined,  and here I was going to try and start posting on a regular basis again.  I guess I'll stick to the off-topic section for awhile longer.

Otherwise great story,  I am glad that this game has changed the lives of those people.   Its nice to hear about a game being blamed for changing peoples lives in a good way.
