i didn't think it was a error, rather a figure of speech, and as such perfectly acceptable. Still if you think about it, it sounds rather strange to "belong" to a religion

2. To be a part of, or connected with; to be appendant or related; to owe allegiance or service.

The OP actually made no mistake, especially when reffering to organised religion.
